Scotland
Sorry couldn't resist
I've know it be difficult to use them in England and I have known them to be refused here before, unfortunately, hope you can get or have enough other currency to tide you over until you go home and can use it.

You might try a bank like Credit West or HSBC who are used to dealing with expats and may have delt with them before, but it's a long shot
There should be a scots person on here that may have more information, or been in a similar situation

Yes, sorry just read your other post reference renting and realised you were here for more than a holiday, congratulations on getting married hope it was a very special day for you.
If the banks wont help you perhaps someone going back to UK will exchange them for you, my neighbour is Scottish but he went back last week, he comes back in April if you haven't resolved the problem by then I will speak to him and I'm sure he will exchange them for you.

Sorry it is bad news,. I have just spoken to a friend in banking and they say that Scottish pound notes cannot be exchanged here. the only currency that can be exchangedare US dollars, "£sterling and Euros. apparently the central bank will not deal with other currencies. I don't know why, and my friend doesn't know why, and she is a Bank Manager!
so she said the only way is to find a friend who will take the Scottish notes and give you sterling, and then take the Scottish notes back to scotland.
#sorry it is bad news, as it was generous of your guests, and of course they would not have had any idea of the notes being invalid.
I wonder if there is any kind Kibkom member who can help. I know there are a lot of Scots around the place, so if any one of them is returning to U.K maybe they can help.

sorry again it is not good news, but that is the answer.

Marions(AKA lady Penelope off Thunderbirds)
The relevance is that the OP was trying to change Scottish money into TL.
Quite honestly,If I was a TC and someone proffered money with 'Royal bank of Scotland' written on it I wouldn't be too keen to take It.
I realise that the Scottish money is issued by several banks.
All of which are dodgy.

the poor girl or fella wasgiven it as a wedding gift. according to my banking friends it is not only Scottish money that is doomed here. No Australiandollars, or south american monies, or........ just the three currencies of euros, sterling and US dollars. So I guess it is not so much the Scottishnes of the gift, but the foreignness!

I just hope that the donors of the gift did not realise the situation here. Plus of course Australian dollars are something I would change, but can't. and I don't think Aussie banks are dodgy! (some might say they were, I guess !)

I hope that would not be a wasted trip as my friend in Banking assures me that no one anywhere will take Scottish money. But maybe a phone call to the exchange in Lefkosia would verify or deny that.

A friend who own's a business was also given Scotish £ notes (one of the lads that work for him took it ). We changed it for him and then when we got back to England we took it to the bank and they changed it into English £s for us, so see if you can find anybody that is willing to change it for you.

And to the first poster, we have a relative coming out inNovember, going backon the 10th, so if all else fails i will give you sterling in exchange for the scottishnotes, and our relative can change them in U.K. Just let me know where you are - unless you have found osmeone else before.

Marion.

Please stop posting on things you have no idea about.
The bank of Scotland has never been part of the money exchange system in the TRNC.
I have had to change money for tourist from North of the Border who visited my restaurant, I then had to send it to the UK by means of a friend to put it into our account, remember there is no bank of Scotland as a clearing bank, they have to use the Bank of England.

I hope this does not effect marions 5 stars.

I know I am a new member, but I go back to Viller Owners web site, I remember the rubbish on all sites, I do not wish this forum any harm but I do take something or other about the number of posts Marion comments on.

I am not a person who hides his identity and I am sure there are a lot of people in Cyprus who know me, even Marion.

I just feel Marion is posting for the sake of posting and one day I think she my even answer herself, I am retired and have the time to look at the web on a regular basis.

If you have information that is going to help the people of the TRNC lets share it

I have not made a entry as information, as I feel I don't have anything of direct interest to add, The world news can be read by anybody on the web, why cut and paste it on this web site, ( I must say Marion doe not do this )

My final comment is I have lived in the TRNC long enough to have a Kimlik card and to have been the first person not born a Non Cypriot to stand in local elections ( For the DP Party ) I love and respect my Country.

thankyou to the ones that gave advise to me i have had a good read on all the posts. thankyou marion also for the kind gesture if i get stuck what to do

philoz,, i did not state that i was trying to change the money into turkish lira, it does not matter really.
me and my husband was trying to just figure out what to do with them as i never had these before and i supose the guests didnt know this either before putting their gift money to us in the box.
but thankyou for your advice anyway.

now im a little hurt with some of the remarks, as i am new to this. but i will continue to use this site as i think its a good way to find out information if we dont get the remarks by some people.

nevermind.. thankyou everybody

course I know who you are, and I think you are being a bit insulting here. the advice i gave was direct from a Bank Manager friend whom I went to the bother of speaking so that the poster could have the truth and not just surmising. sowhy say i am writing about things i do not know? I never said Scottish currency was valid here, but i do know thatt it can be taken bck to U.K to help the lady who obviously has no way of cashing on on her wedding guests kindness. i do not know why you are choosing to criticise me for trying to be helpful. anyone is at liberty to do so, and whilst I do not have a kimlik c ard (and I believe you stood as a political candidate at one time , so you obviously are committed to TRNC) i do try to inform myself of truth.
anyway, I really don't have to defend myself, and I think you are stepping a little out of line with the KibKom ethos of 'Helpfulness'.
But you are of course entitled to your opinion, and if you are not unhappy with me in trying to play my part here, then I am sorry. i am trying to help Soner as a moderator on this site, and also of course, to share any informationI have. As to posting too often, as am a fast typist (whose fingers make mistakes) it takes me no time at all.

anyway, welcome to the Forum and I hope that you will be able to share your knowledge of the island to help all those who make enquiries to fine answers here.
plus I never talk about things I don't know other than to perhaps say 'I don't know but I know a man who does' which is exaclty what I did with this enquiry in the first place.
Hope Karen is well and that you are enjoying your retirement.
hope this is not too muchoff thread, or I will get my knuckles wrapped by Soner!

Bubbles, glad you got your answer, and congrats on the marriage.

Marion, you keep on posting on this forum girl, we can never get enough help and advice. You are a star and I appreciate your commitment in helping Kibkom and Kibkomers alike.

Karmels, I too cannot see where you are coming from.... Marion seeked help from a friend in the banking industry and passed on sound advice to a member. So where has she gone wrong? I know you are a new member and I welcome you to the forum. Please do read our rules as we do not like personal attacks on Kibkom.

Halfful, your first reply was funny, lol , but sometimes we need to get to know new members first and for them to get to know us before we can get away with joking. I have also fallan in the trap many a time. I do like a bit of humour so please do not stop.

bubbles - Hopefully you have received some good avice re your scottish note problem - good luck.

Philoz - Rather a sweeping statement re scottish independance, banks and currency. Respect its your opinion but not sure it can be backed up - and no I wont be entering into a discussion about it!

karmels - Read your post a few times. Cannot understand the issue - the poster requested feedback and advise which was received. Marion probably went a little further by seeking professional advise and then passed it on - I believe it was very helpful.

jock1 - We do not tolerate personal insults in Kibkom. If this happens posts are edited/deleted and poster is informed. please respect this

I got so confused by this I did a Google search. May I suggest this is one instance where that might be better than well meant but inaccurate suggestions here (Marion, my dear, do try to remember what road good intentions pave ). It appears only certain UK banks will change Scottish Notes but I am sure some kind person will take them back for you - I would myself but I never go back!

Bubbles: dont let this put you off, they are quite nice really when you get to know them.

I hope the comments about Scottish banks were a mistimed joke - my own family claims Scottish ancestry and you dont want to mess with us.

thanks RR,but one thing I did not say that could have a relevance, namely that my step son is in currency exchange! I really don't shout my mouth off unless I am pretty sure I can follow through! the offer still stands if poster no.1 needs.

As to the Scottish bit, well with my surname I can harldy belittle it, plus I am given tounderstand my grandfather was scottish, and a earlier rellie was Welsh, and a bit of French and romany gypsy,(and no doubt more) so apart from being confused as to my identity (which I have worked on) I can have no room for racism!

Marion, re post 13 and 15,if you thing I am wasting the time of the recently wed couple, you are welcome to delite my post. I am just saying 'try', and I am not suggesting 'go tomorrow'. Perhaps I was thinking they are going to Lefk. sooner or later, and it is worth a try. Since you know so much better, and have offered your help, there really is no need for the post.
Do you know, re post 18 and 20, somehow I think it is not so much the posters tone that has changed, or is changing, but certainly the tone of the mods and the owner. Very but said with a

gosh you are not wasting their time. Youoffered what you knew, so why on earth would we want to delete. the only posts that get deleted on here is if they are against forum rules. Your postings most certainly were not sorry if you thought I intimated a waste of time was suggested by you. I remember how frustrating it can be here to find answers without running backwards and forwards.
Until I phone my friend I had no idea whatsoever about what currency was acceptable here, so I reckon very few others would either. i would have assumed that if an exchange would not take them a bank certainly would. talk about learn new things every day.

Not sure what you mean about changing attitudes, but as said with a smile, i accept my own confusion with a smile.

What I think is good on here is that people DO try to giv e answers and help, and that is really what it is all about, isn't it. and quite often several people know little bits of the jig saw of the answer, and together can provide just what is being sought.

I can possibly help out here, as a Scottish national who is proud to be part of the United Kingdom, I will be travelling to TRNC in 2 weeks, I can do a straight swap English notes for Scottish and take them back with me to Bonnie Scotland when I return after my short stay. Unless the situation has been resolved?
