Wanted: Second-hand laptop
By any chance, does anybody have an unwanted laptop they’d like to get rid of. Our, wonderful but extremely old Acer has finally given up its will to live a full life, in spite of Laconic’s best efforts. It will only start in Safe Mode.
It’s spec is roughly as follows Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor, 3 GB DDR2 RAM, Intel HD Graphics, Windows 7 Ultimate, wireless internet capabilities, 500 GB HDD, 2 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0, HDMI, HD Webcam.
Not going back to UK for some time and do not want to pay prices here for a new one, especially with Turkish keyboard, but would happily pay something or even donate the money to a charity of choice. We just missed the lovely Lenovo that was offered for sale a couple of days ago.....
Without it we are bereft of TV and radio and DVDs and vids can only give so much entertainment!
Any offers to clear some wardrobe space? Many thanks.

Have you tried restoring your laptop to Factory Default?

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
These bits alone show it's a good deal newer than mine (USB 3.0 didn't exist!), and mine is working perfectly! So I suspect possibly as little as a good clean-up of the hard drive (CCleaner?) might improve things; if not, as Soner suggests, a reset to factory default should work wonders!SourBrandy wrote: ....It’s spec is roughly as follows ..... 2 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0, HDMI, HD Webcam.....

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Thanks everybody for your help and thoughts. I tried CCleaner before I took the laptop in. Laconic said that firstly the hard drive was broken, they fitted a new one and then they said the motherboard was also faulty. They said they tried some second hand motherboards but to no avail, the machine just keeps shutting down. Not being the greatest techie out there, I am now at a loss, except for trying to find another machine.

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Thinking off the wall!!! You first said your laptop will only boot into "Safe Mode", later you say it keeps shutting down! The hard drive has now been replaced with a new one?? Did you retain your old hard drive?? Was the laptop only booting into safe mode before or after the hard drive was changed?? Was the laptop shutting down before the hard drive was changed??
Major cause of laptop shutdowns is "Dirt". Laptops require a lot of cooling - especially out here - if the CPU fan is faulty then the CPU overheats and the laptop will shut down (its a safety feature), if you have a graphics card with a fan on it and that fails/overheats it can also cause the laptop to shut down. I have even found that at times a faulty RAM module will cause shut down.
Why you laptop only boots into "Safe Mode" is a different issue and normally is a software related issue such as a bad driver - by now the computer boys will have destroyed any trail to the problem and it would need to be started all over again. Unless you have given your laptop a really hard and physical time before it failed I would doubt that a motherboard fault would have occurred - but it is always a last thought and only, normally, a component failure on the motherboard!

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Hi Waddo,
Thanks for good reply. The machine will only start in Safe Mode by repeatedly pushing F8 at start up. This of course brings you to the black screen with the white options. If I try Repair Your Computer, it shuts down. A while ago it did start up fully if I pressed Last known Good configuration, this now doesn't work - it gets to the Windows coloured bit and shits down.
The machine has had a jolly good hovering (Ahmet @ Acdinc) and he has fettled with it as well. Both he and Laconic said that whenever they try to load news Windows or try any repairs, it shuts down. and then endlessly and pointlessly tries to start again.
I've been into msconfig but I'm not knowledgeable enough to try any of the really technical stuff. I've disabled all but the most essential things at Startup, to no avail either.
Any other thoughts....?
Many thanks

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Sorry to say this but if Ahmet @ Acdinc is stumped then to me you have been to the best and your old laptop is now BER! (Sorry, old term meaning "Beyond Economic Repair). I have worked with Ahmet for years now, swapped bits of old PC's with him, repaired motherboards with him, tried some "off the wall" repairs as well and can trust him absolutely. He will never give up on a problem until it is one that is proven non repairable!
So now we come down to component failure or bad (dry) joints on the motherboard - Ahmet has instrumentation which can find bad components but dry joints (joints of soldered components to the motherboard or indeed cracks in the solder tracking on the motherboard) are very difficult to find indeed. However, with Laconic saying they have also tried other motherboards without success it gives me cause to doubt any problems on your existing motherboard - hmmmmm.
Thinking time now - I will get back to you.

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Thanks again Waddo for your very considered reply.
Glory be though, this morning the little beauty started up properly!!! Only to switch itself off again after about two minutes. Oh the joy of seing a proper sized screen and having noise, if only for a brief moment.
This is what makes me think it's more of a software problem than hardware. Why should it suddenly decide to work?
Many thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
OK, let us assume (always dodgy that) the problems lies with the software! I will also assume that being a true, honest and upright citizen, you used a fully paid up version of Windows 7 Ultimate - probably the 64 version - but that at some time a person or persons unknown re-loaded your software with a "Blagged" copy of the same thing? Let us also assume that along life's travels you have misplaced the original Win 7 CD and have been forced into using a "borrowed" copy? That is a good starting point, in particular if you do not know if your laptop is 32 bit or 64 bit CPU - problem there is that if you have a 32 bit CPU and have loaded a 64 bit operating system the the 32 bit CPU cannot handle the normal windows 64 bit program and it shuts down. As a rule of thumb, if you have a PC that is only equipped with less than 4MB of RAM from the manufacturer then it will be 32 bit and over 4MB of RAM from the manufacturer it will more likely be a 64 bit CPU.
I have cut and paste the following as it is a good explaination:
Applications all use shared resources on a Windows system; these are called DLL files, or Dynamic Link Libraries. They’re basically just pooled libraries of common resources that many different apps will use. Windows puts them all in a single place to make things easier for software developers.
So those DLL files are written and structured in fundamentally different ways because they’re meant to be used by 64-bit applications or 32-bit applications. If, for instance, a 32-bit application reaches out for a DLL and finds a 64-bit version, it’s just going to stop working. Imagine going into a library to find a specific textbook, and then realizing that everything is in a foreign language. You’d likely leave and assume you went to the wrong place right. Same basic principle applies here. Anyway, that is just background information for you so don't bang your head over it - lol.
Question: When your laptop deins to start, can you get into the BIOS setup before Windows starts to load?

Hi Waddo,
Do you mean by pressing F2 before the WIndows start up, then yes, I can do that, but as with msconfig, I am not technically knowledgeable enough to continue. Or I can start it in safe mode with command prompt.....
Thanks again for your invaluable help. If this works, we will owe you.

Waddo,
Just looked and it says it is a 64 bit OS, if this helps. Best regards. CP

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Another guess: If your laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 / 2 GHz processor then it will be 64 bit so we can rule out the 32/64 bit problem - maybe. I wonder if you can boot your computer from the CD/DVD drive? You would have to have gone into setup and set the CD/DVD drive as a primary boot device to know that or not?
Keep in mind that this is all "straw clutching" at the moment but every little helps - lol.
It would be nice to find out exactly what processor you have fitted to your laptop - it could well be a simple case of CPU overheating that is causing your problem and these old processor's are now cheap!!!

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Hi Waddo,
Thanks again for your thoughts. According to the top of my laptop, it has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5800. The machine is an Aspire 5735, that's how old it is! And yes, the CD/Rom drive starts first but I don't have any of the installation discs. Laconic put Windows 7 Ultimate on for me when I tired of the original Vista Basic which it came with. That was some years ago.
I think you are right about the overheating malarkey as during this summer we had to run it with a fan on it all the time, else it would shut down when it got too hot. Better now that Ahmet at Acdinc gave it a good hoovering.
How would I get another processor and/or the installation disc?

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Let have a look around the computer places and see if I can pick up a used T5800 for you, I can get one in the UK dead easy but it is getting it out here without damage and I have no visitors coming out till late in the year - much too late for you. Sadly for you I gave away an old Acer last year, it worked but only good for TV - sorry about that.
Somebody out there must have an old laptop because it is rare for people to upgrade and throw away the old one. Surprised that nobody has answered your plea for help. Maybe if you post on "Items wanted" or on the main forum you will have more luck?
I have Win 7 Ultimate Installation DVD so that part is not a problem, live in Catalkoy which is a bit away from you but still not problem. I have a spare PC I use for testing but it has no HDMI port so would not of use for your TV. When is it you are planning on going back to the UK?

Hi Waddo, again thanks for your help. I did post my original request on the main board but it got moved to the internet section within a day.
We are not due to be back to the UK until much later this year also.
I'll try my original post in the Items wanted section and see what happens, but in the meantime any help you can give would be very gratefully received.
Best. CP

Re: Wanted: Second-hand laptop
Not having any luck in finding a replacement CPU for you laptop I am afraid - the CPU is an old one and they have become rare over here. I have one more place to try and then it will be the next time I go South or find anyone coming over from the UK. This may be a bit of a lost cause but I refuse to give up yet. Hang in there.
