Sadly the GC's decision to mark the 1950 intention to achieve Enosis is absolutely what can be expected. It can hardly be a coincidence with regard to timing. It looks like the talks could possibly have actually got somewhere. The decision of their parliament ensures the talks will fail. That's what most of them want and it looks like that's what they have got. Why would anyone trust the GC's - on the matter of talks or anything else?

It will be interesting to see how the EU,UN respond, usually with talk of more never ending negotiations, the EU gave the GC the carrot of membership during the Annan talks, its about time the international community started to use the stick of direct trade, flights, recognition of the North.

As Eide would have been at the talks I have not seen one statement from him. Surely now EU and UN see the game that the GC are playing, just give us some sort of recognition, we do not need EU just recognition. I am quite surprised talks went on as long as they have. Now pack your briefcases and go home. The Swiss holidays and jollies are over.

The ROC government are badly advised and very insensitive at this critical stage of the talks.

One wonders what goes on in their minds

It appears there are different versions as to who walked out; Akinci and Anastasiades each accuse the other, while Eide (scroll down about a third) gives a somewhat ambiguous "explanation"....
Discussing this a couple of hours ago, a TC friend said that surely now it is time that the TRNC was recognised by the rest of the world without any further wasted "discussions" - my response was "no, it's long overdue..."

I personally do not see this as being a battle between them (GC) and us (TC) but one of of

"them" - those Cypriots who wish to keep the hatred and animosity between the communities going and keep Cyprus divided, of which there are both GC and TC imo.

and

"us" - those Cypriots who wish to put the past in the past , to decrease hatred and animosity between the communities, to break the cycle and to dream and strive for a better Cyprus for all Cypriots , of which there are both GC and TC imo.

I know GC that would have wept when DISY allowed Elam to push this through by abstaining on the vote. That Elam and the minority parties that voted with them would try something like this was only to be expected. For 'us' this was a tragedy and a disaster. However Akinci and our parliament did not have to raise to the bait in quite the way they did imo either, not as an 'us' nor even tactically as far as it is a GC/TC them and us . Demanding that the GC reverse their mistake is little different than the same old same old 'tit for tat' that has defined the previous 60 years and is also a tragedy for 'us' as well. Expressing the TC communities extreme disappointment and concern that DISY allowed this vote to pass via their abstention and suggesting that GC could consider suspending the implementation of it whilst talks continued at such a critical stage would in my view have been better for 'us' and just tatically for the TC community.

Nor do I think that if the talks do break down over this, as seems entirely probably right now, it will lead anyone to recognise the TRNC or even start direct flights. I do think there is a good chance that if these talks end then the next round of talks will be on the basis of negotiating an agreed separation but even if this proves to be the case most of the same issues that have proved intractable to date will still be intractable then along with some relatively new ones (like division of natural gas etc) and can very easily imagine many many more years and cycles of talks and breakdown of talks. Deja vu.

Very sad and lamentable developments in my view
