New air travel security restrictions

I suspect that the new UK/US ban on electronic devices may cause some inconvenience to those who travel to/from Ercan, especially those traveling only with hand/cabin luggage, as Istanbul is one of the listed airports....

One 'expert' quote was that 'terrorists' would be more able to obtain a seat immediately next to the aircraft wall, ensuring more effective damage to (i.e. destruction of) the aircraft, rather than hold luggage, where (hopefully?) the suspect item might be in the middle of other luggage which would (to some degree) lessen the damage...

BBC News, today, gives a very good description (which is strange for them) of what you can and cannot take on board in the cabin. However, it does not mention such things as "Kindle", unless of course they fall under the "Generic" term of tablets! I suspect that any electronic device, be it a Kindle or a child's toy that is not of a size of a small "Smart Phone" will no longer be allowed on aircraft cabin baggage. An iPad definitely falls under the "Banned" list of items! I would think that the cheap flight providers are rubbing their hands with glee over all the hold baggage charges they are about to make and there will be many unhappy people with children who now have to remember how to entertain their charges themselves from now onwards. So, the world has progressed onwards from explosive sandwiches, exploding bottles of water and all the other normal things people carry to now exploding laptops and tablets - what next??? Maybe providers such as Ryan Air will now ban clothing as well - lol. In a world gone mad at the threat of terrorism the best place to be is at home!

Maybe it is time to insure your electronic devices against theft and damage now whilst travelling or just leave them at home when you go away and then search for Internet Cafes like we used to not all that long ago.

Oh how wonderful, reading a books on long flights. Something I've always done. Such a pity people are losing this ability especially younger generation. Remember it doesn't apply to all airlines YET and only those making direct flights to 8 countries AS YET. Nine airlines are US ones. and of course direct flights INTO UK. from the affected countries. Pegasus, Atlas and TA, more down South i.e. Easy Jet, Thompson, etc. affected if direct flights to Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Kuait, Saudi, Qatar, UAE. US airlines have been given until 7am GMT on Saturday, Anything larger than 16cm x 9.3cm NOT allowed.

The facts on news are coming out all the time. Emirates say it comes into force end of March until end October, UK travel industry states it is open ended at the moment.

I think this will run and run because of the implications of safety, value of equipment, together with information carried on laptops etc.

Apparently the explosion which is in effect the battery needs to be activated by hand hence the reason for the device to be in the hold. It stems from a US forces raid in Yemen in January where they found several of the devices.

Looks like the company at Ercan that cellophane wraps cases will be doing big business. Is that going to be the only way to protect electronic devices packed in hold luggage? I can see a big rise in hold luggage thefts otherwise or am i just being cynical...

This has now come as an issue. In the past, Airlines didn't want electronic devices in the hold due to insurance claims for damage, now people will be told they must go in the hold leaving Airlines potentially having to pay for damages and leaves more negotiations due to the changes.

While obviously not nearly as good as reading a book on a Kindle, Android smartphone owners can download a Kindle app which syncs with books in their Amazon Kindle account. Do not know if there is a similar app for iPhone owners.

Thomas Cook have updated their security advice regarding electronic devices, so assuming there will be a similar pattern for all airlines. (I am only using Thomas Cook as an example as I was just looking through their holidays).

As I understand it, if you fly Turkish Airlines and transfer in Istanbul you will have to hand over your laptops etc. at the gate when leaving Istanbul. They will be put in secure containers and you will claim them in baggage reclaim. Sounds safer than packing in hold baggage. If anybody has flown Ercan/ U.K. with TA perhaps they could confirm.

No Pegasus are definitely not doing that you have to put them in your hold luggage!

Have now been told that laptops etc. will be removed from Hand luggage at Ercan even if you are transitioning in Istanbul with TK. Will let everybody know as travel on 31st. As to what is happening.
