It's a horrible, long overnight crossing on a very, very old ferry. Bring sleeping bags as the top deck is the cleanest part of the boat.

We did the journey Girne to Tasucu last month and I think the ferry company was Ergunlar. We also had a dog with us so decided to book a cabin which we could only book the night we arrived at the harbour. It may be different coming the other way! But it only cost 80 TL and, although small, the sheets were clean and you had your own toilet. We thought it was well worth the extra cost.

From a customs perspective, although we were doing it in reverse to you, as we were relocating to France, the worst point was departing Turkey. Although we had no prohibitted items (meat, alcohol, tobacco etc) we had to unload our entire van (63 boxes plus sundry items) and submit the van for x-ray. We were being dealt with by the narcotics/smuggling officers so you know what they were looking for! Our advice to you is to stay calm and go with the flow! Expect the worst and be surprised if it is straight forward. Try to watch your passports - ours were handed over to another couple while we were unloading the van, who then drove off with them! Fortunately they realised and came back but the officers themselves were very careless with them! It may be easier coming the other way particularly as you are using a commercial company, we drove ourselves. Good luck - it's an adventure!

Honey, we are only using a man with a van to drive us over not a commercial company, i was just wondering if i could bring some of my small electrical items, will sell all my big stuff here before we leave, as ive been told as long as they are not new and used we should not have a problem, so just put it to a wider audience to get a answer

we drove over 8 years ago with a car full of personal items.we made a list of items marked at the side of each item, used condition.gave the list to customs who looked at it and waved us on.other cars were being made to unload everything.

As far as I am aware any used furniture, electrical goods etc should be OK. They certainly didn't seem bothered by ours and we had the usual fans, laptops, kettle, toaster etc. We understand that vehicles are chosen at 'random' by the computer for x-rayo but we did notice that only vehicles with foreign number plates were 'randomly' selected!!i

We did this trip two years ago from Turkey to TRNC- Although the arrival into TRNC is confusing, we were stopped and partially searched but we told them that everything was second hand and there was no problem .......however we didn't realize that your only allowed one free importation into the TRNC. We drove down with all our delicate items first and then had the rest sent by courier from Turkey, these were impounded and we had to go to the customs office in Lefkosa to claim them and open the boxes after showing the contents lists. They seemed to suck their thumbs as to how much we should be charged and once paid , the courier company collected them and delivered them to our home.

Re: Ferry Tasucu to Kyrenia
My son drove his van from the UK 2 years ago. He had all his clothes and a few well used electrical items. His television was 4 years old but he was still made to pay duty on it on arrival in Girne. The customs made him empty his van and pounced on the TV and a box which said microwave but it held shoes, the customs man was very disappointed when he opened it. I think it all depends on who is on duty on the day and how they are feeling, the best thing is not to argue and just pay up.

Re: Ferry Tasucu to Kyrenia
My son had to pay 180tl for the TV. I went with him into the office and he was told this was the minimum they could charge. I know it is not a lot of money, I was just informing people that you do have to pay some duty on certain used goods.
I have never had to pay for TV license here in the TRNC and I have bought 2 televisions since moving here 6 years ago.

Dont mind having to pay a few hundred lira if they charge us, would cost a few thousand to buy a new one, and its a good TV

A TV licence here in TRNC? I think that's one thing they haven't dumped on us yet. Don't talk it up for heavens sake!

For a TV or a Music/Hi-Fi System, a licence is required, which may be obtained from TRNC Customs Authorities. The current fee for this licence is £10.00 and is liable to change.

You were ripped off, there is no tv or music license in the TRNC. There is DUTY which is at the discretion of the customs at the time.

Oh well at £10 it was hardly a great money spinner, its also mentioned in the removals and shipping section so I'm not the only one and at least I got a document that was described to me has a tv licence, I'll try and find it and translate the title.karmels wrote:kerry 6138

Quick google search. "There is broadcast capture duty (bandrol fee) for TV,Video,Hi-fi set, etc."
This is probably what is being described by the shipping company I used has a licence and was separate from other fee's and came with its own receipt.
wiki states. Tv licence abolished in Cyprus (RoC) Turkey 2% of electricity bill and indirect charge on appliance at purchase.
either way good luck on the ferry.
