Yellow haze
Looking out to sea east of Girne there is a lovely evening showing
Of sulphuric dioxide. No wonder there are so many health issues.

Re: Yellow haze
It's from the power station at Alagadi. I used to work for a company that manufactured and tested
Medium sized Diesel engines ( weighing us to 120 tons). There were very strict control
Placed on us for emissions and of course exhaust stacks of that size are expensive.
What cost do you pu on health? We are all breathing it mixed with what Assad adds
To it of course.

Re: Yellow haze
Add to all that the dust from all the quarries, ever growing construction sites and the cement dust flying out of lorries which are not covered. It's absolutely scandalous but nothing is done. The air quality here is terrible most days.
I live not far from Kibtek power station and see the yellow haze coming from there on a daily basis. The people to suffer the most from it are the residents of Arapkoy as the wind tend to come off the sea a lot of the time and they are right in the firing line.
A very high percentage of children at ESK have asthma and various breathing problems and it's not difficult to see why. It must be the same for other schools. Very worrying.

No chance of Elexus putting a "Scratch and Sniff" patch in their brochure then?

Re: Yellow haze
The last 'effluent plant' i saw was the photo of raw sewage from the hotel being pumped directly onto the beach at the side of the hotel, for which they were given a paltry fine and ordered not to do it again........
It still smells so disgusting every time we pass that we have to close the car windows so I would be amazed if any effluent plant exists.

The plant is ther, saw it yesterday on the way back towards Girne, going out towards Esentepe you go past it without seeing it - probably because of the "Gag" effect!
They have had the new exhaust stacks to be fitted to the current chimneys for a few years now but have still to fit them.

David, the sadly the reasons for staying in a country which I used to defend are becoming fewer. So just keep giving your donations to Tulips as I suspect we're all going to need them. And to think, the Government doesn't donate a Kurus to them!!

Re: Yellow haze
We get the same disgusting yellow haze from the power plant at Kalecik. It seems to be permanently over Sunrise Beach Club which is very close. The plume seems to follow the coast as far as Famagusta and I once "followed" it all the way to Dhekelia.......

Re: Yellow haze
David, having moved here from the Midlands 10 years ago and on the upper reaches of Catalkoy I am happy to say I have never had such clear air - apart from in the Falklands where you cut almost cut a slice out of it - of course when the sand winds come it is a different matter but normally the air quality is good. I was in Paralimni yesterday and the air was thick and heavy but maybe it was just the heat, coming back across the plains it was good and clear and the Karpas is almost always pure air. It is a shame that the electric stations create so much bad air but I just stay away from it, the majority of the air in Cyprus is far better than anywhere else and for sure better than Turkey.

David in reply to your post - NO
Too many reasons to mention
Suffice to say no funds left to return
But as for the 'haze' its been thick last few days
and Elexus frankly stinks
so NO David, nothing good about it
that's without mentioning the rubbish

I think people living there just get used to the rubbish etc because the sun is shining. For all it's faults and there are many, the weather is good and many kid themselves cos they cannot afford to leave. Pretty sad really.

Re: Yellow haze
We had a house in N Cyprus until 2016. We had been coming to the Island since 1999. We loved it at first but gradually became disillusioned. We had problems getting our deeds, water and a decent road. The island seemed to be changing to be the same as many other Mediterranean resorts. The old fashioned charm we liked was gradually being eroded
We are coming for a short visit shortly and will be interested to see any more changes good or bad

You will need a new map to work yourself around the morass of 8 - 12 storey blocks of apartments that have materialized since you left. Not to mention shopping malls and casinos. Good or bad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, well that depends on whether you are making a fortune out of them, regardless of whether you are Turkish, Russian or Israeli.
