Recidency

Hi
We moved over here in Feb and thought it was time to apply for our residency.
We got all the required documentation as advised by the BRS and trotted down to the police station in Girne.
We were then told it was not necessary as we are over 60 yrs old.

Is this correct?

Is there any down side to not having residency

Thanks in anticipation
Eric & Pauline
Loving it here by the way.

You have said you got all the required documentation as advised by the BRS? If you took that information off their web site then you already know the answer to your first question. The short answer is that "due to a gentlemen s agreement" and that is not written into the laws of the TRNC, you do not need to RENEW once you are over 60.

Your second question is the biggest bone of contention you will find on this site. Many are for it and many are against it - pay your money and take your choice. There are endless threads on the subject, suggest you do a search on the site to find even more information.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

The first thing is if you were under 60 you would have been fined for any days over your 90 day grace period, it is entirely up to you after reading the large amount of info on this forum however we decided to do it the first time just so we were legal when applying for Driving Licences etc., also be advised that if you do apply it will be back dated to when you entered the country and as stated by waddo if you read the BRS information it states that you don't need to go to the police station you go direct to immigration at Nicosia.

If you are over 60 you do not need residency. If they change that in the future then you and everyone else who no longer bothers will have to apply. As it is your first time, and I assume you've never applied before, I would say just enjoy yourselves and don't waste any brain cells on it. Good luck by the way and I hope you both enjoy your retirement.

Hi

Agree with frontalman, if you are over 60 you do not need to apply for a temporary residency visa. There is a gentlemens agreement in place - it is not a law and doubtful you will find much officially written down about it.

The decision whether or not to apply for the temporary residence visa when you are over 60 is really a personal decision. My suggestion is to do a search on the forum as this has been discussed many times, you can then read the different points of view and make up your own mind as to whether you apply or not.

At the end of the day if you are under 60 you must apply and don't stay over your initial 90 days without doing anything - over 60 the choice is yours.

Agree it's not worth getting to worked up about either way.

Eric7622, I actually think you got exactly what you asked for i.e. advice. However when it comes to Residency there are as many points of view as there are days in the year and as others previously stated "you pays your money and takes your choice". The decision is entirely up to you.

Hi Eric7622, don't know if you drive and if so if you have got your TRNC Licences if not I would suggest you do so quickly as I believe if you are here for more than 90 days you should have one.
Enjoy your day, the sun is shining.

You don't need residency to get a local driving licence, a muhtar's letter will suffice to prove you live here.

Yes we did get our licences a few weeks ago and the police seemed interested in seeing these and then more or less waved us on as if we were being stupid applying for residency.
