Announcement:

The power of the electric corporation is not able to electrocute the area where our wells are due to a high-voltage pipeline work in our area until 11/07/2017 hours. By noon tomorrow, we'd like to ask you to use your consumption as carefully as your consumption of water is not being distributed.

What! Two whole days without water in Catalkoy village????? Try living further up the mountainside, if you get water every 3 days it is heaven, but you don't have it for long because up comes the man in his truck and turns it off again..... They tell me it is because a pump is broken - funny that we used to get water here 24/7 4 years ago. It's about time they fixed the pump it would save on the wages of the waterman who switches the water on (when he remembers) and switches it off again before you have had any.

Yes well, about on par with my Turkish!!!!

To be fair, those old pipes were laid by the British when Cyprus was a colony and were well overdue for replacement even in 1974. It is the time of year that they chose todo the work that gets me!

Having seen the state of the pipes outside a friends house (Ozankoy) I certainly wouldn't want to drink the water.

Are we talking about UK our water pipes are 1920's. Mains burst 3 times a year. The last time the water was coming out of a BT hole in ground and Thames water told us it was not their problem as it was BT water.

Would it be better to wait until the winter, then dig up the roads - you would still be without water mind you - and when it rains the holes will fill with water and the mud will be everywhere. You can't pick a perfect time to do work to satisfy everyone and I am sure that given the choice the workmen would rather work in the cool than the heat. At least this time of year you can almost guarantee the weather and the amount of daylight you have to play with. The work will get done faster this time of year but it means we all have to suffer a period of heat and less water, that's life!

Looks like lower Ozankoy got topped up last night with mains water. I checked the tank at 5pm yesterday and it was a quarter full. This morning the tank was full to the ball cock. Hope everybody else got a refill.

No, not winter of course, though there is less need for drinking water then. No time is perfect but there is bad , and there is worse and there is worst, and this time of year is worst. There is time - between approx mid April to mid June and Mid Sept to mid Dec. - when the weather is comparatively mild and the risk of heavy thunder storms quite low.

As for daylight and workmen's choice there is an article in last Sat's Cyprus Today reporting calls for outdoor working to be banned from noon to 4pm due to excessive heat. The same article recommends all to drink two to two and a half litres of water a day! A weekly supply for a family would be quite a load, particularly if they did not have a car. Tanker water is usually well water and not safe to drink.

As for "that's life" water is one basic necessity to maintain life and actually this situation is near death for many, and life not worth living for others. Spare a thought for the infirm and/or elderly and particularly the incontinent and those who care for them and need constant water for washing. As do mothers of babies and young children. Think about the disabled who can't carry loads of water - what do they do if their roads are closed to cars, let alone those who don't have cars. What about those who can't afford tankerloads of water?

Added to that is the damage to those who rely on the tourist industry at high season, the further disruption to the already chaotic traffic for all, and again particularly for the less advantage the risk of cutting off of electricty added to overheating which cannot even be mitigated by adequate supplies of water for drinking , bathing and washing.

But I always do "Spare a thought", however, what makes you think that I, myself, do not fall into any of the groups you have highlighted? I live in Catalkoy and have had four power cuts in the last two days, it made no difference to the water supply which I have not received since last Friday, nor did it alleviate the increase in road traffic due to many people diverting through Ozankoy in recent weeks to avoid the road works on the main Girne road - but I say again "That's Life".

And I say again it is not life, it is vulnerable people's lives being put at risk and many people'e health damaged (I have no way of knowing your particular circs) by greed , inefficiency and lack of concern for the underprivileged.

Last night they ran a JCB on my road until 1.30 am. It started again at 10.30 , stopped at 12.30 and started again at 4. The entire road is now up, noone who did not think to take their car elsewhere can use it, walking to even thelocal shop is dicy and means negotiation piles of stones , and there is no way to access a water tanker , or even the dustbin lorry!! So the sick old and vulnerable are left without water, food or the chance of sleep! I am not a headache person, but I am developing something approaching a migraine from the heat , noise , stress and dehydration. Heaven help those who are prone to migraine anyway,, not to mention other diseases.

Anyone who has not yet know do not drive to or via Ozankoy. Several roads are impassable and parking is taken up by brighter residents who are moved their cars from the immediately affected area. Only possible good thing about the whole situation is that people may get used to not using Ozankoy as a "short cut"

I was told that if the mains water is off for some time the Belidiyere are legally obliged to supply a tanker at a cost of no higher than what you would normally be charged through the mains. When our water was off for 5 days in Yesiltepe a couple of months back, I was twice offered a free tanker of water by the Belidiyere.

Totally agree with waddo. I have 2 small children and it's getting very uncomfortable for them. Wenluvenaround mostly old people and I have made sure my husband has been round them to make sure they are all OK and to make sure they all have drinking water. I've now had to start throwing drinking water down the loo to make it flush. We have been here 5 summers now and have only ever had issues this year and last.

You are obviously a very kind lady, mic, very few people check on the elderly , particularly if they live alone, in an emergency - they are too frightened of becoming involved.

PS Save your washing up water and any left over from hand washing clothes etc. and use it to flush the loo.

Can concur re the situation in parts of Karmi/Karaman.

The week before the wildfire, we had mains water for only 2 days or so. Worryingly there was no mains water in the area of fire.....it came on for a day or so about an hour or so after the fire crews left.

Following that, many residents have had no or very little water and have had to resort to getting some by sharing a bowser or from friendly neighbours by hosepipe.

There was an article all about this in yesterday's Cyprus Today. Miraculously, since this morning mains water has been flowing for more than 12 hours!

I should not bother Waddo. After all the hassle and health problems and a house inches deep in dust caused by laying the pipes, we still do not have water in lower Ozankoy( well literally a trickle last night) and the tanker I eventually got through I paid for as no one at the Muhtar's speaks English or so they say

Nah! Not me, I could not get down your road because the huge tanker was blocking the way. The dust tanker was coming down past Best Butcher as I was trying to go up there - first time I have ever had to reverse back down that particular road and with the potholes as well as the cars parked tight against the walls of the Sports Club it was a touch tight, more so when you are being chased by a dust tanker driver who is on the phone at the time....

Cheers we actually got water at moderate pressure for an hour or two this evening. Off again now - I thought Turkish water provided a regular flow.

Btw re the water to clean the street. It did not , all it did was provide a lot of mud to splash residents with. The mud has now dried solid, so please be aware that at the first rains the roads of Ozankoy will turn into something approaching a rather dirty skating rink! We need signs outside the village saying "Here be dragons"
