Sadly whilst these radical extremists are around there will never be a solution to the Cyprus Problem.

Little wonder the Turkish military still occupy the North.

Long may it continue.

Very depressing.

The sad thing is that this article will not be widely read and the world will still think that the reason for the Cyprus Problem lies with the Turkish community. The GC side have always been better at promoting there cause and highlighting how they were the ones hard done by.

Many GC firmly believe that the problems began when Turkish forces in there words "invaded" in 1974. This is what they are taught in school and sadly the Greek Orthodox Church also promotes. In actual fact history shows us and has evidenced that the problems go back much earlier. Radical extremists on the GC side will never give up the Enosis dream and Turkish Cypriots sadly will never be seen as equals in there own country. The Turkish Cypriot community are right not to trust the other side and are correct in insisting on some sort of protection.

One thing to remember is that whilst these GC extremists do exist, the majority of Greeks in the south are good people. The intervention and peace operation by the Turkish forces in 1974 has ensured that the ethnic violence, persecution and killings have ceased and peace has been restored. Everyone no matter what side should be thankful for that.

Final nail in the coffin of reunification, I'd say.

In your opinion of course.

However supporters of ELAM and the political party managed to force thro approval for schools to celebrate the Enosis union referendum of 1950. All this was happening whilst talks were ongoing in an effort to end the Cyprus problem.

Personally I think the ongoing indoctrination of young people in schools is worrying. The coup of 1974 and the dream of Enosis with Greece, caused fighting between Greeks and Greek Cypriots both pro and against Enosis. This then lead to attacks on Turkish Cypriots.

In my opinion this is very relevant and somewhat concerning.

Posh in Devon, I totally agree with you, we watch everything that is unfolding at the moment with the 'talks' and the attitude of the GC's. Elam is worrying in that it does seem to be young people who have been indoctrinated. Just a thought but if for example, Zero Troops, Zero Guarantees, UN pulls out, no borders, free movement, how long before we see real trouble flaring up? I think we would see a lot of ex-pats leaving if the Turkish Army left completely, I know we would.

Hedge Fund, you are very naive if you think that Elam is not something to worry about, just my opinion of course, but they remind me of Hitler Youth.

An accord of some sort between the North & South of Cyprus is worth tens of billions and it will happen - and the chanting of a few hundred racist mugs will not stop it.

To compare them to the Hitler youth is laughable.

There may well be some sort of accord between north and south, but at the moment I cannot see it. However; ELAM and their supporters have already made an impact.

There may well have only been a few hundred demonstrating but this party have managed to influence what is going to be taught in schools with regards to Enosis. What this does show is that this notion or dream that it could happen at sometime in the future will mean that Cyprus will never ever be seen as a place where Turkish Cypriots are treated as equals.

Young people are easily influenced and whilst many of the older generation would likely rather forget the past and live together in peace, these young people will be parents themselves and so the message gets passed on. From our experience we find the majority of the Greek Cypriots friendly and welcoming. However; the one bad experience we had was with a young Greek Cypriot couple who drove past us at a t junction in the south, spotted our number plate and gave us an interesting and somewhat rude hand wave. They then proceeded down to the roundabout, went all the way around and came back towards us, again giving us the hand wave and a few obscenities.

It's not the Hitler youth but they grew from nothing - so to dismiss there influence would be foolhardy. Food for thought.

On the subject of schooling I think we should be more worried that Turkish schools will be banned from teaching evolution and taught that jihad is patriotic.

Fortunately that is not being extended to Schools in North Cyprus yet, but I share your worries about the future. Sadly too many Brits in North Cyprus have swallowed the 'Turkey is wonderful and never wrong' propaganda!
