Why don't you do it yourself? I did mine after the winter, it cost me about 200tl in materials and about 3 weekends on my knees but saved a fortune. I think quotes were coming in at around £1000. It looks great and I'm very proud of my own work.

Good for you Welldigger. Can I ask, did you have to scrape out the old grout first? Just wanted to know as it would be something I would do myself in the future. I have just re-grouted marble floor tiles around my pool, but only where there was no longer any grout left.

meme - could I ask why you want to regrout your pool?

If it's because there's some grout missing, and you
a) want it to look nice, and
b) want to prevent tiles from lifting,
then that's the correct reason.

However, if it's because your pool is leaking, and you think that regrouting will stop that happening, then it probably won't!

The pool is waterproofed by a coating of rubberised 'isolation material' applied to the concrete pool base and sides before the tiles are laid. The tiles and grouting do not form the waterproof barrier.

I hope that you are acting because of reason (a), but I thought that I'd just post this as quite a few people have a false impression on this subject!

Like Welldigger, I did my own pool regrouting too. Not difficult, but a bit tedious. I chose winter/spring to do it, and had an empty neighbour's pool to store my water till the job was done. If you have a small power tool it makes removal of loose grout easier, but a scraper and screwdriver did for most of it. I must add that my wife helped, which made the job easier. It still looks good 2 years on and will do for many years to come, I hope.

Just had a thought - the size of your pool tiles are a factor, obviously. The bigger they are the easier the job; mine are approximately 10 inches (25 cm) square.

Sorry for hi-jacking the thread.
PapaBravo, did not realise you could get tiles that size for pools, can you please send me a photo? I am in process of trying to arrange to get my pool tiles changed. I have those silly small mosaic tiles which are thin and had been laid very badly by construction company (Oran Construction also trading as Rodan - avoid them like the plague). These tiles after a few months are all coming up, so was thinking of retiling with the rectangular ceramic pool tiles.

I had lots of grout missing but still had to scrap away the old grout. It is tidious but doesn't take too long. I did it manually but you can use a mechanical method if you wish.
It's quite satisfying knowing you did it by yourself.

Meme :

It was a Dremel, a small high speed drill with various attachments. But to be honest, I think the Dremel broke just after I began using it, so managed with screwdriver and scraper! A pressure washer would quickly and easily remove any loose grout once the pool is empty, but you would then have to remove the water and bits of old grout when you are done. It is not a difficult job, it just needs patience, and the grouting does not have to be perfect as you can't really see it once the pool is refilled; just make sure all the cavities are filled in and smoothed over. A great feeling of satisfaction when you have completed the job and refilled the pool.

The tiles are actually 20cm square. I have taken a photo and will email it to you. Can I have your email address please.

A 11cm angle grinder with diamond blade is ideal for getting the grout out. Used one to do our roof terrace, saved loads of time. If you do use this method, wear a mask & goggles.

Thankyou all for your help. One more question please. I will need to empty the pool......any ideas what to do with all that water. Seems awfully wasteful to just let it go into the earth. There are no pools near to us to store it in.

There really isn't much alternative I'm afraid, the cost of a 70 ton tank (for an 8x4 pool with an average depth of 1.5 Metres) would be prohibitive...

I believe the pool tanker owners will take your pool water, possibly at a cost.
