If the disk is truly "dead", i.e. does not spin up, is not recognised by the computer either in windows explorer/file manager etc, the only chance is probably a specialist company who would dismantle the disk and "read" the platters - and that process is expensive!
If the drive does spin and is at least recognised by a drive letter, Recuva (free version) may do the trick - I've used it two or three times with good results.

Re: hard disc recovery
A hard lesson for us all Johnny! I've taken to having several external hard disks with copies of life's important stuff working on the basis that the C drive can 'eff' itself if it feels like it... and they often do! But I won't lose stuff I treasure if it does...
I lost a load of really great photos from my C drive where my download software from camera seemed to default to.... and then noticed by sheer chance that I'd also stored them in 'the cloud' at some stage and was able to recover some precious memories...
Now I only install software on the C drive (that can always be re-installed) but the memories can never be retrieved if they are truly lost....
USB Hard drives are so cheap now it's daft not to make use of them and back them up too.
I fear your efforts to recover the 'lost' data would prove prohibitively expensive as they charge by the Mb and would only really be appropriate for a commercial enterprise....
Good luck though...

What's your email address? Email davidandmicheleb@gmail.com with problem and ill ask hubby if he can help. He's recovered files that have been wiped from hard drives before (not everything though). I honestly don't know if he can help you though.
