The terminology of this report is a little 'emotive' - "Break away regime", 'self appointed....' but yes, TRNC will be there - just hope that they are accepted as offering something positive and that there will no grumbles and mumbles from any areas. Just wish I was going.

absolutely good news. I agree. Just saying it is sad at some of the descriptions given to us after all this time. But of course the news was from a southern source. It is all progress, but the terminology shows how slow the progress is! As I said, just wish I was going. But I know quite a few who are!

The World Travel Market exposure could change people's perception of North Cyprus as a touirist destination although generally tourism is looking promising.
Recently a cruise ship docked at Famagusta and Kyrenia and I suggest that Kyrenia in particular will become a very popular 4 hour stop over for cruises.
More importantly, when asked "will you come again", most first time visitors to the TRNC reply "yes".

Comments like that are just filling column inches in my opinion.

You can't escape from the fact that until the country is legally recognized by the UN nothing is going to change.
Even if it does change- in order to become a 'Top holiday destination', there are a few things that need to be sorted.
Just have a look on 'Trip Advisor' and you will see that the majority of moans are along the lines of:-
*Half built buildings everywhere.
*Hotels purporting to be 5* but are probably one star by anyone else's comparison.
*Fly tipping everywhere.

I live here and love the place.

One of the reasons I moved here was that it is so inaccessible to the people (usually British)who want a cheap beer and more beer holiday.

It's bad enough with the few fat sweaty ex-pats that do there shopping in their swimming trunks much to the embarrassment of everyone.
The place opening up to even more low life is not something I would appreciate.

Dodger -Msg 10 I had heard that tourism was 40% down this year-to be fair can't remember where I heard/read it.
So I could be wrong.
I think the Turkish Gov. are trying to unsaddle themselves of the subsidy that they have to pump into the place ($1Billion last year?)
by letting casino hotel complexes open willy-nilly.
Given that casinos are banned (I think)on the mainland, they see the financial future of the place as a mini offshore Las Vegas.
It is a policy a little like the one the US and Canada have used to give the native Americans a way of making money.

If you do a search on line for some of the hotel/casinos here (as I did last week out of interest)you will find they want upwards of 400euros a night for a small room in an Hotel that was slagged off big time on tripadvisor and are deliberately pricing themselves out of the European family holiday market in preference of the Middle aged Turkish businessman market (Hence all the Knocking shops).

There are a number of well run family hotels that don't go in for that market such as the Pia Bella in Girne.
But I will bet they don't get as much of a 'leg-up' as the casinos get.

On a recent visit to Panama we were told that it was illegal to drive without wearing a top..............maybe they should adopt that rule here walking in town and in the supermarkets.

Dodger-I honestly did not know that the Pia Bella has a casino attached.
I personally dislike gambling in all its forms_but I think you know the point I was trying to make-In fact your reply has made my argument more powerful.
The point being that TRNC is only going to be successful as an offshore Las Vegas,and not as a family tourist destination.
I assume that you agree with all the other points I made in my previous post?

Paul/Philox. When we were at the Pia Bella last Dec/Jan the Casino had closed, no it had nothing to do with the Pia Bella, the Casino used to be the Pia Bella restaurant but was seperated off from the Hotel the rooms above the Casino were not used by the Hotel the access was closed off.

the TRNC quite has been represented there for quite afew years now - the problem as always is the people who go to promote the TRNC! i fear there will be alot of coffee drinking and alot of man in suits sizing each other up - instead of interacting with the public! maybe I am just bitter - i was really hoping to go but I was wasn't even given the opportunity - by the boys at the top! hi ho! to be an english woman working here!!!!!

That's a bit unfair, Libby. Maureen attended the WTM on behalf of the TRNC on more than 10 occasions and worked her socks off along with others who were there to promote the country. She always paid her own way. I'm sure if you offered to go under your own steam the TRNC tourist board would be delighted to let you help promote the place.

Message 9 hits the nail on the head!!
TRNC is stuck in an impossible situation and the greeks have a very powerful propaganda machine despite the fact they caused the problem in the first place!
The "flip flop/socks and sandals string vest brigade" with their tattoos and demands for pie and chips have done enough damage already but unfortunately that is a growing problem and their offspring will ultimately choose to holiday here until we become a new Benidorm.
But that's the problem with tourism and if the Russians begin to invade it will be even worse as my experience of them in Turkey is that they are more obnoxious than the beer swilling Brits.
Anyway the place has already been ruined over the years - but we love it and the locals - what's left of them!!!

Dodger-if you win the Euorovision song contest, You have to host it the following year.
Now,It apparently costs a bloody fortune to host it, and you don't make any money out of it.
So, some countries lose deliberately-Which is a great reason for the UK not winning since Mary Bloody Hopkins(Might be wrong there but you get the Idea)was the last Brit to win it.(might be wrong there as well-sorry!)
