Sah Supermarket are to be congratulated

I went to the rear of the store yesterday and was so impressed - They are streets ahead of any of the others it was clean and tidy and have containers for the following:-

1. Paper
2. Cardboard boxes
3. Plastic bottles x 3
4, Metal

There might have been containers for glass but I didn't have time to check on the far side.
Inside they have containers for small batteries and bottles tops (I think)

Inside they proudly display:-

(a) When building the store and car park, all olive trees that were moved were then replanted
(b) All left over food is donated to KAR
(c) Long life shopping bags are to purchase by the check outs. (TC lady in front of me bought 4 of them)
(d) They try to be as environmentally friendly as the country permits.

On top of all of the above, they have the most friendly and helpful staff I have come across together with a large carpark which in itself is a great help.

(Sadly I don't have shares in Sah!!)

Couldn't agree more Sophie, they are streets ahead of everyone.

We live in Esentepe but always load the car with our recycling before we shop at Sah, when we went last weekend all the glass bottles were just in boxes/containers/bags on the ground so that's where we left ours.

Apparently the owner of he store is very switched on re recycling and the KAR side has to be good.

I have some of those long life shopping bags from sah, I always take them with me where ever I go shopping even to Supreme in the vain hope they might not like me advertising their competitors and do something similar

POST EDITED BY MODERATOR TO REMOVER INNAPROPRIATE POST BY PIPER

What a mean thing to say, Just because recycling is important to her, as it is to me, does not mean she does not have a life

Piper, thank you but I have an extremely varied and very useful life. It is you I feel desperately sorry for because you are so thoughtless and uncarying about the environment here. I can just picture you chucking plastic bottles out of a car window as you drive along.

G and S, I too hope you are wrong and will contact the owner of Sah went he is next over here to find out for myself. Thanks for letting me know.

I agree with Sophie (subject to the query over recycling) Shah are streets ahead of the others for service and consideration for customers nd for initiative.

I was really disappointed by the new Erdener - just the mix as before but bigger. And as far as I could see no disabled spaces and the same old trolleys and a nasty steep slope to push them up, whereas Shah is a pleasure to use with disabled spaces handy for easy use trolley and even some shade. The only thing I would query is upstairs loos and the disabled loos downstairs are locked - they say that is because everyone would use them, but I am not really surprised who even if they are not disabled wants to trail up stairs presumably leaving a full trolley at the bottom\?

One day I will perfect the art of visiting Shah and walking with head high and eyes firmly forward straight past the kitchen equipment and crockery , the fascinating range of soft and semi soft drinks and above all the lovely French chocolates, biccies etc.

Ragged Robin, ok there do not appear to be disabled parking spaces at the new Erdener, but I do have to query your reference to the 'nasty steep slope to push them up'. When we went there were trolleys in the entrance area, after you go up the 'nasty steep slope', and baskets, and a wheelchair for those that need it. So, surely you do not have to push the trolley up the 'nasty steep slope'...but just need to grasp it on the way down when it is filled with shopping. I did not find the slope at all steep, and when you think about it, maybe it helps people who have got a trolley load to get it back down onto the car park.....just a thought. I found the new Erdener to be much improved on the old one, there is a fresh fish counter, the selection of breads is far more varied, and they do stock more variety of goods. They are new trolleys, not the same old ones, which granted had a mind of their own at times. Credit where it is due, it is a big improvement on the old store, which we always loved anyway..courteous staff, albeit a bit cramped at times. And without wishing to create an argument or debate, I do remember when Sah first opened you were rather critical of them. Give Erdener a chance, we were told by a member of the family there, the day after it opened, they know it is not perfect, give them a month...well maybe three..but the fact is he was on hand and was asking if we needed help or assistance in what we were looking for. Can't ask for more than that...just give them a chance.

Yes I was critical of Shah when it first opened, and if you read my post you will see I still am over the toilets. Other problems, such as disabled access, seem to have been overcome.

However toilet access is not normally a major problem (inshallah)) with me and I mentioned it because I care about others and try to see their problems.

However I have to chose what it best for me even if it is more expensive and the slope is a problem , at Erdener is a problem and as far as I can tell unnecessary so are the trolleys and the surface over which one has to wheel them. Oh and you must be joking -do people really want to rush down a slope out of a Supermarket chasing a runaway overloaded trolley! Parking will become a problems when the nearby parking spaces are filled by those who do not need them, as is inevitable.

You must have been at a different time from me, as I saw no supervisor and the staff seemed exhausted and unable to concentrate. Having read one of the post above I see why and feel sorry for them! Would the loss of one days trading really have justified overtired staff, badlystocked shelves and dissatisfied customers.

I have been patronising Erdener for 20 years now and knew and often chatted with one of the old owners (now retired) but it has gone downhill recently and I am saddened to too they took insufficient opportunity of the new store to overcome the problems posed by the size of the old one!

Actually I really preferred the old, cosy handy little Erdener, but it became too popular and the crowds of avaricious Brits made it too unpleasant for the likes of me and it is still with sadness that I go to Shah instead. However i am always being told I dont keep up with the times ago and if Erdener and its kind want to abandon its homely image and go into competiton with big boys they too must catch up and be more innovative.

I wish them well, but wont be returning until I am sure I can park within easy reach , and (with the limits of living inCyprus!) not have to go elsewhere because despite their size they are not fully stocked.

Sorry but i personally do find it a bit “nit picking” to remove the post by piper.
in a way… it is an interesting point of view not to care about “a bit recycling” and “instead enjoy life”.
instead to feel “offended too much” , remember:
- One long haul flight (only one way) or 1,5 return flights to UK is “equivalent” with 1 lifetime paper collection.
- An average household in Cyprus produces approx 4000 kilo of Co2 a year…
- An average car another 1000 to 2000 kilos a year.
- (can be continued)
You can avoid a flight or two, you can walk more … you can have a solar system.
To collect some bins and papers… is, energy wise, pollution wise… sometimes really “a bit recycling only ” (still, should be to my opinion mandatory)
Very often people are fed up because they “see” the litter. Nothing else. No “real meaning ” is behind it.
If everything would be nicely collected (by the belediye or whoever) and brought to a rubbish collection point… stored there to rot and later covered with a nice layer of earth (and later houses build on… as in UK, EU and many places) then they would not complain at all…
Basically these people would not recycle (and of course fly for a week-vacation to Hong Kong).

In my view the Post by Piper was unwise, inconsidered and quite unnecessary insulting to another poster. However it was no way near as obnoxious as some that have been allowed to remain. The problem is that by the time the Mods have seen or responded to an alert about a "bad" post half the readers have seen it anyway and the remainder are understanably curious to know what it is all about.

Kibsolar does however raise a very interesting point. As someone who is being adversely affected by traffic fumes straight into my living room windows, I wonder how many of those who are so energetic for preserving plastic bags would even give a moments thought to whether their journey, or route, was really necessary in the light of the damage car emissions do to the environment and others' health! Just a general comment, Not, repeat not, intended to reflect on any individual.

Most of us reuse plastic bags anyway , mainly for bin liners. If we did not have the shopping bags we would have to
buy plastic bin liners which would be equally bad for the environment but increase the Supermarket's income!

More immediately dangerous litter are things like lighted ciggie endss, broken bottles and syringes , plu s items such as batteries which really should be prioritized.

The post by piper was reported by a Kibkom member. After reading the thread and post in question it was deleted as it was deemed against the forum rules.

As for others curious to know what the post was they can of course pm or email piper off line and enquire if they were really that interested.

Moderators are not on line 24/7 hence we do follow up reports on posts as soon as we know about them. Sometimes this happens quickly and many will not have seen the original posting and at other times the post may have been read by many.

If a post is deemed inappropriate it is then either, edited, deleted or temporarily removed for further discussion by moderators. As per the forum rules, a moderators action does not have to be explained. We are often damned if we leave a post and damned if we delete a post hence providing explanations often does not help - some will agree, others will disagree.

However; members who have had a post removed, edited etc can pm a moderator off line should they wish to discuss further. Hope this helps.

As I've said before, a PM to the author of a moderated (i. e. deleted) post would be courteous and would stop that person wondering what happened to their comment.
Note that I'm not saying that an explanation has to be given (though that too would be courteous): just simply a message to say your post has been deleted by a moderator.

Speaking only for myself, I normally do try and pm the person who has had their post moderated to let them know. I have also tried to provide an explanation for the deletion.
This is usually accepted, however very occasionally it can end up receiving an abusive reply which does make us wonder why we bothered.

Back on topic, Sah do seem to be a long way ahead of there competitors with regards to recycling, parking for disabled customers and also trolleys that actually go in the right direction! I would be interested to see them promote this activity further with perphaps details on how items are recycled, % of items recycled each month etc.
Anything that can help educate and in some small way influence everyone has to be a good thing.

Yes. They are great. They've been doing this for a loooonnnnng time though and this is the first post I've seen re. recycling other than my own.

I hope you are all recycling....If you wouldn't put it in the ground in the UK, why do so in Cyprus?

I must think myself very lucky then that I did not meet you on the slope Deniz, but instead a kindly gentleman who (although or perhaps because he was not so young himself) saw my plight, had the consideration, intelligence and courtesy to know that different people have different physical abilities and came to my rescue!

I think I made it clear that the type of matting (I assume chosen for wet weather(and is used by other supermarkets) which snags the wheels and combined with the slope and the type of trolley created the situation. It was fortunately a situation which I could, literally, walk away from but I would not like to try to get a wheelchair up it,
