how do i get to put smiles etc onto my posts,

When you do your post if you look to the left of the post box you will see the smilies just click on them and they will appear on your post

I am also unable to add a smiley. When I click on 'said' smiley, I get the text equivelent rather than the actual cartoon smiley, do I need to activate something on my page?

You can also click on 'Preview' which shows you what your post will look like - it gives you a chance to 'mess around' with it, and make any alteration / corrections etc before you actually do post it...
