It does give a reason : "Unfortunately, reading and moderating comments has become very time consuming. The time saved will be used to add extra articles and content to the site. Thank you for your understanding."

I key it was the extremely racist remarks from the trolls in the south. Most remarks from them had little to do with the post just racist remarks. It was mainly a couple of people with multiple identities.
