I would like a question or two answered please,
When selling do you have to go with the buyer to Lefkosia offices and do you need a letter of authorisation,or can you just agree a price and hand over the document to the buyer,
I bet these questions must have been on here but I can't see the post.

I think you will find that if you don't go to Lefkosia to sign over the vehicle to the new buyer in person you will need to go to a notary to give the new buyer permission to do it himself.

I think that rather than use a Noter (properly called a Certifying Officer) both buyer and seller need to go to see your Muhtar with your passports , car documents (& probably, proof of your address, but I'm not 100% sure on that one!) & he will fill out a form stating that person A wishes to sell car xxx to person B.

Either person can then attend the Vehicle licensing office in Lefkoşa as long as they take along said documents & copies of passports.

If you are the Vendor, and you elect to not attend the office in Lefkoşa, you do run the risk of them not actually completing the transfer, so that the vehicle remains registered in your name... and you remain liable for all speeding fines and other infringements! You can argue the toss, of course, and demand photographic evidence etc. but it can be a lot of hassle

It is also the Law that the change of ownership has to be registered within a certain period (don't know how long!) and I also don't know if it specifies who would be held legally responsible for failure to do so - I suspect that it would be the purchaser, but don't rely on that!

I'm sorry that there are a few details on which I'm not absolutely sure.

Agree KC is spot on. When the buyer goes to the office in Lefkoşa take absolutely all the documents:
Form from your Muktah signed by all 3 parties, postage stamped (approx 6TL) and overstamped.
Car Registration document
Current insurance, road tax, emissions certificate, MOT cert
Copies of both buyer and seller passports

And GO EARLY in the morning - it took us 3 hours waiting in the afternoon for processing that lasted 3 minutes!!

Can someone jog my memory as to where it is in lefkosia, and can it be either the buyer or sellers Muhtar that does the form please? Many thanks

Well, well, who would think that selling a car would be so simple?

Come to think upon it, if procedures by National and Local Gvt's in all of their departments were to be simplified there would be so many job losses that it ain't never going to happen.

I have done a sale and a purchase recently we did go to the Muhtar with the purchase , but with the sale we did not. The gentle man had the document with him and we both signed it and gave him passport photocopies.

Also a tip from the Cyp. gentleman who purchased from me , he said forget Lefkosa office (all day wait) and use Famagusta.

Also if log book is in joint names then all relevant paperwork and persons.

Head into Lefkosia from main Girne roundabout and about 300m before the Marriott hotel you need to turn left into one way road by a Turk cell shop and then after 150m turn right again into one way street which has huge sprawling car park on uneven ground. That’s the place to register your vehicle. Car park is to the rear of the entrance.
