License plates for north cyprus
Can anyone clarify what is the law regarding the white plates that we were told by Trevor Hughes when he was representing dagli sigorta.
Like many others he indicated that you changed then to white at the rear. So off we did only to read in the paper today that they are not legal because they are plastic!!!.
Is this true or have I mis interpreted the newspaper.
If it Is true then dagli need to pay for countless people who now have to buy a new yellow one !
What a farce !

Just got off the phone with a mate who works in the motor trade here, he advised me to put my yellow plate back on.

Re: License plates for north cyprus
Why did some people get white plastic rear plates based on what at the time was possibly just a rumour?
Did they forget the ABC of Cyprus:

Strange a friend of mine in the motor trade advised me to have them as we will all have to have them soon, surely all the rental companies wont want to change their plates again back to yellow.

Just bought a new car a few weeks ago and it was fitted with white rear plate. Every car on the forecourt that was registered had white rear plate.

Had my old jeep MOT'd a couple of weeks back and the garage changed rear plate to white one saying it would not pass on a yellow plate
As I got older I congratulated myself on my tolerance..... Now I realise I just don't give a "ooops"

Re: License plates for north cyprus
In the TRNC, the current legislation is for cars registered before 1 June 2017 to have plastic number plates which must be White at the front and Yellow at the rear. These vehicles have until 2027 to fit the new plates (see below).
If the car was registered after 1 June 2017 or if a plate is replaced due to damage or missing both plates must be metal and white with a blue left hand margin embossed with the number of the licensed plate provider.
Fitting all white plastic plates is not legal. According to the article on page 9 of Cyprus Today.

Forget the 'legislation ' - ask the man at the MOT place, he's the one who passes or fails, so his is the only opinion worth considering, right or wrong

At least we still have the old yellow pate so can change it back. Doubt if our car will still be going in 2027 so should be ok! At last a benefit of keeping something 'just in case'!

Re: License plates for north cyprus
As often happens confusion reigns.
Lots of posts about white number plates at the rear of the vehicle and some people went out and got them made up....
I was indeed considering same myself. BUT.........
Seems like the white rear plastic number plate may well not be legal as it has to be metal......the yellow rear plate seems legal for non newly registered vehicles up until 2027 or thereabouts.......the mot men seem to make the decision based on whether their cousin is in the number plate manufacturing trade....
Glad our vehicle was MOT'd last year so by the time it's due again maybe something has been sorted, but who knows. This sums up some aspects of North Cyprus life.

There is a firm in Karakoum which has been recommended, also another in Karanagologu. Try the search facility, but I will also try to locate them for you.

All of the Advertising (REKLAM) Agencies will make you a plastic plate in either colour scheme.
I got mine from the one that has moved to the junction of the Bypass / Karaoğanoğlu Road on the big roundabout at the entrance to Alsancak.
I have no knowledge of who / where can supply metal plates. Car accessory shops might be able to advise.
p.s. Just saw tomsteel's post...

Thank you for your input, but I was really asking what you meant, because you didn't indicate to which post you were responding - either by quoting the post, the post number, or by addressing the poster by name. It gets really confusing when people post an isolated comment without any context, and no indication of the post to which they are responding, particularly in a thread like this which has covered such a wide range...kerry 6138 wrote:Really ! Cyprus today mentioned 10 outlets @100tl but at present they couldn't name them. so how can some old cars have the 'legal white metal plate with a blue blob' friends and relatives come to mind followed very quickly by the emissions a few years back when only a few garages had the licence to do the test.

Re: License plates for north cyprus
OK, last week I had my motor "perused" during the Tri- annual walk around and point examination that now costs 165TL plus the exhaust sniff test of 30TL - a total of 195TL farcical collection to help support the country and officially termed the MOT & Emissions tests. No complaints when you consider that it cost £41.00 compared to the maximum cost that it can be in the UK of £54.85 - and yes I know you can get it cheaper than the UK maximum if you shop around the various garages but it is more fun and interesting here than anywhere else in the world.
So how does it all work? First you scour all the newspapers, coffee shops and bars along with forums and police for what have been the latest changes. Next you make up your mind how many changes will effect you and either ignore them or implement them. Second, you go to the garage of your choice and have your emissions check completed - keep in mind that this must be done either the day of or the day before your MOT check. Third you take your paperwork (all of it just in case the rules changed whilst you were sleeping) to the tax office and pay for your MOT test, this you must do on the day of your test and you can not do it before the first date that your vehicle is due it's test. Fourth, after making sure the outside of your vehicle is perfectly clean and that the engine and bay have been cleaned as well, you arrive as early as you can at the test centre behind the Girne main police station and try to find a place to park. Fifth, open your bonnet and go into the office with you paperwork and receipt for payment of the MOT, talk to the guy behind the counter who will give you another bit of paper and send you out to see his "Friend", the guy who will conduct the test. Sixth, find the man who will conduct the test, don't forget to take your paperwork with you, and point out your car then go and stand in front of it. Seventh, wait for the "Tester" to turn up and complete his work - you are now in the lap of the gods - if all is well he will mark the paper the office guy gave you and send you back to the office. Eighth, take your paperwork back to the guy in the office who will ask for your old MOT paperwork and make out new ones to give you. Ninth, take the new MOT paperwork back to the tester who will sign it and that's it - you are on your way all nice and legal again.
Of course things can change so expect all the above to be wrong - in particular Number Plates!!! Intensive investigations have produced the following information on number plates:
The old style (plastic) white at the front and yellow at the back are still legal and will remain so on vehicles registered prior to their last MOT right up till 2027. However, if they are damaged in anyway or fail to meet the legal standards then they should be changed - you can keep the same white/yellow format if you wish or change to the new white with a blue bit on the left hand side if you want to.
The new style (plastic) white/white number plate, without the blue bit, will/should/may fail the MOT as they are not legal.
The new style (pressed aluminum) white/white with blue bits are totally legal on any vehicle. You can change to these anytime you wish at a cost of 100TL per set, you will also find a number embossed in the blue bit that indicates which official press has been used to produce them. Mine happens to be number 1 but I also spotted a number 2 and 3 on vehicles during my MOT.
Personally, I see no danger in the new pressed number plates, pressed number plates have been in use in Germany and most other EU countries for years now and strangely the UK is the only EU country to have the majority of plates in plastic, although there is no law in existence that decrees what the plate should be made of in the UK.
Finally - the new style pressed white/white/bit of blue plate is 100% legal in the RoC although some people who have had these plates fitted subsequently added a cute little CY sticker onto/underneath the blue bit and THAT made the plate 100% illegal!!! Of course if you want to be a belt and braces kind of person, you could always carry your old white/yellow plates in your boot just in case any friendly, smiling RoC official told you your current plates were "Unacceptable" and "Illegal" in the RoC. Happy Driving all.

Car MOT yesterday via Erdener garage. Rear registration plate (yellow with black lettering) cracked prior to inspection. Ergo, new white plastic plates with black lettering and a RED line surround fitted front and rear prior to test - car passed. No blue line with number on metal plates anywhere!

Lodger, depends on who the garage is and how many car's paperwork they put through each week!!! Some garages are even trusted to say the car is fit for MOT and don't even take the car to the MOT place - shock, horror, can't be true - lol.

My car passed its MOT, last week, with yellow plates at the back. Nothing said about changing them to white or metal.
Although my mechanic said we will all have to change to the new metal plates with the blue strip next year.
These have to be ordered and are ready the next day, and TUNC has them........the big reklam place at the end of the by pass.

Re: License plates for north cyprus
it may be referred as an MOT but I have always been lead to believe since 1989 it was confirmation the car and paperwork are what they say it is and this is why the engine number is so important. In those days if the hand brake was a little stiff it was the normal thing to have a stone to put under a wheel in the boot. and probably a lot of cars had engines swapped etc. Times have moved on and more checks are carried out and a lot depends on attitude and their time.
I would rather we had accountability rather than laws and you must do this and that.
For my own safety my car is checked first by me as the driver and then put right by the garage. Ok I may not pick it all up but weird noises, car not driving straight, not stopping within the correct distance, lights being flashed at you at night etc, you know something is wrong. The only annoying thing is the state of the roads and my poor van's suspension, VW did not make it to go where it goes here and as I said to the dealer this week they should purchase it back 21 years old, 10 here they should be proud.
Hopefully the white number plates will be a time to check the paperwork (tax etc) but its sounds like they can be just made. a wonderful opportunity lost!
