Where To Buy!!!!!!!!!
I am always amazed and a little bit dumbfounded by posts that ask the forum members, where they can buy every day items, such as sunbeds, specific foods. And these are from people who have been in Cyprus a number of years, so please anything to do with food go into a supermarket DIY a Yapi TVs and washers the appropriate shop. I know, I know the few of you that have fingers poised over your keyboard DON'T OPEN THE POST.

or even use the 'search' facility provided on the forum headings. Sadly topten, many posters want others to do the research - for whatever reason.

Re: Where To Buy!!!!!!!!!
I do not agree? I purchased my holiday home in TRNC 3 years ago. The advice/guidance I have been given within this Forum by its members I could not do without. I have bought all my White Goods, beds etc from guidance from forum members and very much appreciate it and may it continue. I have visited places to shop, eat from again useful guidance from KIBKOM members. My neighbour in TRNC wanted to know how I knew more than they did and they live in TRNC. Simple answer KIBKOM members

I totally agree with DEnizismael;
I am becoming very disillusioned with this forum, but one of its nicer aspects is when people share experiences and information in a friendly and helpful manner.
It is also helpful to loners and older and infirm people who cant get about much, and try several shops. The one thing I would ask, however, is that posters indicate in the heading what it is they are looking for so that those who are not interested in the item concerned and/or just dont know will not waste time opening the post. This goes also for buying and selling items.

This forum is a bit like a TV channel, if the heading doesn't tick your box don't look at it. Simple really
I have to say I have found this forum absolutely brilliant, I have acted on advice, bought items, attended functions etc etc etc.
There are worse things happening in our world than what appears on Kibkom.
OK I've taken cover with my tin helmet on

But why go trawling around the shops when you can ask here and get a range of prices and opinions from different people?

Re: Where To Buy!!!!!!!!!
What harm does it do? It's nice to have people helping each other out, even for the little things that run out here until the next shipment comes in. It's no different than asking a friend or a neighbour if they know where you can buy something that you can't find, just more options and information on the forum, as more people chip in with their little bits of help. It's handy to have a list of places to try, rather than driving about willy nilly, particularly if you have difficulty due to age or disability. The one thing that might be helpful, further to Ragged Robin's suggestions, is that people state what area they live in roughly, to get the best suggestions for their location.
It would be a sad day if we couldn't help each other out, no matter how little.

If you are near Catalkoy/Karakum you could try Shah. I walk past their kitchen equipment to avoid temptation but it does seem better quality than most, if pricey.

Re: Where To Buy!!!!!!!!!
Muad_Dib. There are a couple of kitchen shops opened in each of the malls in Famagusta and the Airport Mall, which sell quality items. Not sure if they sell knives or not, but will be at the Airport Mall later this week, so will have a look and let you know.
Years ago, we bought a set of little knives from the shop that sells everything down the new harbour road. They were cheap, and don't look anything special, but are brilliant and still as sharp as ever 8 years down the line. So maybe worth trying in there. Haven't been there for a while, but you had to drive over waste ground to get to it, on the left hand side going down towards the harbour. Shop is located down stairs in an apartment block. Usually have things like plastic chairs, sunbed cushions lying outside.

In reply that is not an everyday item that you would find in your local yapi or TV shop, and it was custom made not off a shelf.topten wrote:Does anyone know where i can get a terracota house number?

isn't it the purpose of a FORUM to exchange ideas/opinions and communicate with each other?
It's an online community, and that's what a community does... communicate.
I can only say I've been given great suggestions and it's been very helpful. Thank you all!

Must be a reason why so many people have viewed a post with the heading Where to buy.Could it be that people on here just want to try and help other members in the community. What a silly idea.

This forum is brilliant but the one bugbear i have is in the for sale section, how about posting the price, location, and a contact number, a description in the title bar would also help, items would get sold a lot quicker, if that information is not on the forum i very rarely reply

I, for one, am quite happy to help to respond to these types of requests, if I can. As has already been said, isn't that the point of a forum such as this. Even if it's not an item I'm currently looking for, it may be something that I'll be interested in the future. It can also save a lot of hunting around, especially if prices are posted.
To that end, has anyone spotted Hartley's jelly cubes, preferably East side? They did have them in Supreme but have sold out. I was advised to eat gelatine to help with a joint problem, don't know if it's helping but I find I'm enjoying eating it

As a first resort, try entering ' inversion table ' in the search box at the top left corner of the screen - you'll then see any adverts from people selling one...kayc wrote:Where to buy.... an inversion table?

Sorry Aylin : I found the shelf in Shah which houses cake decoration etc. and there were sachets of the makings of jelly but no cubes of any nature. I also tried Supreme - never again, I did not find what I was looking for , could not even find the right shelf for your jelly cubes, and the parking , access and trolleys made Shah paradise by comparison.
Incidentally if anyone sees REAL cider can they let me know. I mean real stuff made with apples , preferably from Zomerset where the Zider applies grow let me know. Ozankoy/Karakum/Catalkoy area and preferably in a shop with easy parking please. NOT the ersatz stuff made with all sorts of fruit! Why does everything have to taste of something else these days? Same as porridge, cant people make the effort to add a spoonful of real honey if that is what they want with it Rabbie Burns must be spinning in his grave.

Where to buy.....vegetable shortening such as Trex, Spry or similar local version, if there is such a thing? If there is a local version, would love to know what it's called. I have never seen it here, but perhaps am looking in the wrong areas in supermarkets. I know Spry can be bought in the south in cans, but a bit expensive when insurance added, for such a little thing.
I forgot to take my own advice regarding area. Area is far east of Girne, but go to Girne/Famagusta/Lefkosa for shopping, just rarely west of Girne.

Re: Where To Buy!!!!!!!!!
Wasn't too sure what vegetable shortening was so I googled it - 'Shortening is any fat that is a solid at room temperature and used to make crumbly pastry and other food products. Shortening is used in pastries that should not be elastic, such as cake.[citation needed] Although butter is solid at room temperature and is frequently used in making pastry, the term "shortening" seldom refers to butter, but is more closely related to margarine.'
We tend to use Kerrymaid lard which you can buy at the Esentepe Tempo but obviously that is not vegetarian. Someone told us that the local brand Sana Klasik is good in pastries, I have some in the fridge. Translated it is a vegetable margarine with 70% fat (no trans fats). You should be able to buy it in most supermarkets. Hope that helps.

Re: Where To Buy!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much for your help and research, very much appreciated. It does have to be vegetarian, so lard, as you rightly guessed, won't fit the bill. I will look into the Sana Klasik and ingredients to compare with what is in vegetable shortening, although not too keen on using margarine in general. Vegetable shortening with butter (half of each) seems to make a better flakier pastry than all butter.come_on_aylin wrote:Wasn't too sure what vegetable shortening was so I googled it - 'Shortening is any fat that is a solid at room temperature and used to make crumbly pastry and other food products. Ileli sell Spry vegeatable shortening in a can sometimes, but it's very expensive. You could put out an appeal on here for anyone going to Alphamega to bring you back a can or two of Top Chef shortening. It has a very long shelf life. It's what I used to do when I lived in TRNC .

I got a packet of Atora Vegetable shredded suet in Erdener earlier this year intending t make dumplings and never got round to it. I just found it at the back of the cupboard , I cant remember the cost but at the time there were plenty on the shelf. The "best buy" date was July and it is unlikely I will use it for a month or two yet, so if anyone wants to take the risk they are welcome to it gratis.
