Hi,

We are driving our belongings here from the UK, does anyone have any experience of coming in that way?

1. The 2500 mile drive
2. Ferry info
3. Customs at the port

Cheers

Iwould speak a freight agent before you go as you may have big problems on the Turkish border without paper work for your goods.

I did the journey back in 2011, and one I would happily repeat, as it was an experience of a lifetime. You need to give a bit more information, like what kind of vehicle will you be travelling in? The route you intend to take? What kind of belongings? (I.E. furniture, electrical goods etc, etc. How many travelling?)

As already mentioned, your biggest obstacle could well be getting through the Turkish border. I created a blog of my journey, only some of which would possibly be relevant for you. However, if it could be of help, please send me a private message and I will provide you the link and further information as and when you need it.

My wife and i drove over in a motorhome last year, different to a commercial vehicle full of household goods i know but we did have some items on board for our house. As we were in no hurry we probably took a different to the one you will be taking. It might be worth your while asking your insurance company if they still issue a green card on your policy,we had to pay a fee at a number of border crossings for not having one.For what it is worth avoid Switzerland, toll for a full year has to be paid, and Macedonia,€50 for a couple of hours drive to cross the country and only valid for 14 days.
i would advise taking any new electrical items out of the boxes as these can attract duties if detected in the Eastern European countries.
We crossed into Turkey from Greece and had no real hassle at the border, that came later at the Tasucu ferry to Cyprus,i will cover this later. To avoid Istanbul we drove down the Gallipoli peninsula and took the ferry from Eceabat over to Cannakkale, this was a fairly short stress free crossing and it was then a lovely drive through spectacular countryside to Antalya and along the coast to Tasucu.
Some spread happiness wherever they go,others, whenever they go.

I did the journey in 2008 from Scotland via zeebrugge Hanover, Graz Novotel hotel , Belgrade supreme hotel Exirne sultan hotel . Tasecu great western hote,. All the hotels had a garage as I had tv's electrical goods and paintings and such on view in the back of my estate car. Journey took 3 days I was alone and had no problems. When I got to the Turkish border they looked at my papers and log book said nothing and I was through. It was ney later I realised I had no insurance for turkey. The only problems I encountered was Edirne has only one bar and I got involved in a hen party of German girls in Tasecu but that's another story . I got in with some truck drivers in Tasecu who helped me on the ferry and on docking in Girne a nice customs man told me to unload everything he wanted to see the lot. But one of the truckers took me to see the head man in the office he charged me £200 stamped my passport with the car details and told me to go to Lefkosia in a month to get an extension. So an enjoyable and memorable trip with no bandits or baddies as I had been led to believe. Would I do it again ? Like a shot if they relaxed the customs rules on cars. Do it and enjoy it.
