grape vinegar - uses?

Hi, I bought grape vinegar, thinking I could use it instead of malt vinegar for pickling but seems I can't. I can't find any other use for it but as it is sold in huge bottles here, I think there must be. Suggestions please?

I use it all the time for pickling and normal vinegar use. Its perfect.

Grape Vinegar is good for salad dressing, mixed with Olive OIl.

There are various household uses for Cider Vinegar, which you cant get here , including cleaning furniture and brassware. I use white vinegar (bayaz sirke) instead when I can get it, as it is cheapest, but I suppose grape vinegar would do as well . Do a google search (say uses for vinegar) and you will find all sorts of recipes..

I ask because many vinegars (most?) are fermented products which are then turned to vinegar, and cider is basically fermented apple juice!

I know that I could Google it (I try not to ask questions that I can find the answer to in 15 seconds or less), but I thought that it was an interesting point to raise !

Ooops, sorry Keith , I have to admit I do not know! I used Cider vinegar in the UK because it is supposed to be good for arthritis, but have only once found it here. I have used apple vinegar because, as you say, cider is fermented apple juice; but it is not quite the same. Maybe its the old boots and cabbage peelings they add in Zommerset (or by Joe Grundy in Ambridge for afficiendos) that gives the unique flavour .

I use grape vinegar for salad dressing, malt for fish and chips, and white for domestic cleaining purposes and dog shampoo but all tends to vary according to what is available, and/or on offer in the shops at the time I want it.

Incidentally the dog shampoo is a lot cheaper and the bought stuff and they say better for the dog's coat.. Look up "Home made dog shampoo" . THen find cheap olive oil and find some pure castile soap. Oh and I add infused rosemary water, but that is because I grow it in the garden.

For some of the home made rececipes I mentioned on the Internet you can also substitute lemon for vinegar if like me you get a surplus of lemons in the garden.

Why obscure Keith? When people use quote to reply direct to a post, particularly more than one, I sometimes find it very confusing who is saying what
Therefore I use a different style: on email and other forums I change the typeface and or size. Unfortunately it does not seem possible to do it on this, so I have to resort to using italics and/or colour, which I agree is not so effective or attractive, but not under my control. I use blue (which is a bit difficutl to read ) because on a previous occasion I used red simply to clarify my response from others, and my pet witch hunter submitted a compaint that I was "shouting" or something..................... I just cant win

PS If anyone sees White Vinegar (beyaz sirke ) in large bottles in shops West of Girne, please let me know. Erdener and Sah both had it at about 6tl , but both seem to have run out.

Hi RR, I don't know why, but... the first time that I viewed the post in question, the text that you had inserted in the middle of my quoted post was not coloured, which made it slightly more challenging to determine where your comments started and finished - in fact, at first glance, it appeared to me that you had simply quoted my post without adding anything yourself. Do you now understand what I meant? Not that the glitch was your fault, I hasten to add...

I do prefer to leave the entire quoted text in one block, and add any comment afterwards, at least the forum software does make it clear which is which.

On those occasions when I wish to comment on individual points raised within a post, I find it best to 'stop and restart' the quote, so that the dialogue is clearly identified. However, each to his / her own!

From what I understood in Turkey, apple vinegar and apple cider vinegar were essentially the same but the 'cider' bit left out because of the connotations with alcohol.

Update: just in case anyone interested, Shah now seems to have stocked up on white vinegar. Just under 7tl for a large bottle, so something that has not increased in price! and more environmentally friendly than commercial cleaners.

PS No I do not have shares in Shah - worse luck!
