The New Mr Pound on the By-Pass

Please, Please take extra special care when approaching this building. There is no real filter off or back on to the by-pass. What is happening is, drivers are looking for the building and suddenly see the entrance and stick their brakes on without warning in order to turn left. The same goes when drivers leave the car park. At least some of them pause first before turning left BUT they are not taking into consideration the speed of traffic coming towards them. Frightening if you are not prepared for it.

As I passed the place yesterday, I noticed that the car park was full, and that other cars were parked adjacent to the carriageway - unless the authorities take prompt action, we will be seeing accidents galore at this spot!

Oh dear, how out of date I am! Had not even heard of it. Where is it, how long has it been open and how much is it charging per item?

Could anyone who has been there be very kind and do a report for the Disabled Board , apart from the vehicular access, whcih sounds horrific, please advise:

1. Are there disabled spaces and how near to access?

2. Are there steps or a ramp to the access

3, How many floor are there and and how are they accessed.

4. Do any steps or stairs have hand rails

5. Are there disabled toilets and are the ordinary toilets on the ground floor?

And for me in particular (to save unnecessary painful walking and stairs) are they selling dog biccies and chews, and collars and where are they. Also gardening stuff,particularly fertilizer

RR , I went this afternoon no reason to return , a glorified China Bazaar IMHO ;
1. None visable or indicated
2. Very gentle slopes to main entrance (no Handrails ) , highly polished = slippery marble/travertine
3. 2 Floors , 1 at basement level accessed by escalator, no lift seen or inticated
4. Nope
5. No toilet facilities indicated by signage

This is Mr Pound plus , varying prices (not fixed ) and as per previous posters , an accident waiting to happen , I visited @ 5pm (pitch dark ), parking both sides of a dimly lit dual carriageway with cars passing @ 60MPH + with the addition of perpendicular parking in front of the store (reversing out into on-coming traffic ) , pet section had no chews, Gardening section had no fertilizer

Do you have any objection to my transferring your comments to the Disabled Section (if i can!)where I hope to built up a list of good and bad places for disabled, although this one sounds bad enough for the able bodied!

Thanks to both ttoli and Keith. Actually Keith I did know (and am very much aware) that anything posted here is available to anyone who cares to read it with no protection against copying. I asked ttoli's permission as a matter of courtesy from one KIbcomer to another! However, I am currently suffering from bursitis in my left shoulder and trying to operate a computer one handed makes me even clumsier than normal so I am doubly grateful t o you for saving my a possibly difficult excercise!

I despair at the authorities presumably having given permission, for a shop to be built on a site with no other access other than direct access on and off a dual carriageway. Does public and road safety not feature in such decisions? I assume not.

What is even worse, when we went passed yesterday om, there was quite a lot of official parking space, and yet there were still six or eight vehicles parked on the dual carriage way. Completely barking mad!!

I've been watching the construction of this building since it began, and wondering what sort of chaos it might bring. If this is actually how it was designed, then it is incredible that it has been allowed, even here.
On Saturday afternoon, the car park was full, and a few idiots had decided to leave the car park, and turn right, to park alongside the east-bound carriageway, facing west. Their next move would be to do a U-turn, towards Girne.
It is surely only a matter of time before there will be a serious high-speed collision at this site.

It's quite a long by pass and it could be either side of it. As I am on holiday in Australia just now it's a little difficult for me to drive along to find out for myself, hence I asked the question.

It's on the left side when travelling from Alsancak. A little way before Çangar showroom. We went this morning. Couldn't see anything wrong with the provision for parking as there must be room for the best part of a hundred cars, also access from and to the dual carriageway seemed perfectly adequate. As with anything it is the way it may be used that could cause a problem but that is in the hands of the drivers. Downstairs is generally stuff which wouldn't have been found in Mr Pound in town but upstairs everything is 7TL. Very nice well laid out store with beautiful views from the rear windows.

Very true tomsteel, but he UK for instance does have planning laws and protection for places of natural beauty (which most of Cyprus USED to be) and usually enforces them !True they are sometimes " there i,s still corruption and those who will find a way round than purely for financial gain and greed,but rather less frequently and blatently than here. There is (or was when I was last there!) a rather handy little section of the law which made a developer pay back for what he took from local residents by contributing to the improvement of road, drainage and other services in the area, as well as landscaping to "hide" ugly buildings. Although I am not sure how one can hide a amulti storey.

Quoting what the UK or USA or Sweden or Switzerland does in comparison to the TRNC is pointless. We live here and Cypriots will dictate what happens in their country, not what expats expect or wish for. Corruption, cronyism or nepotism is the norm here. If you cannot accept that fact, I suggest a move elsewhere.

laura Bm are you saying that the car park down the slope is for public use, if so what with that and the parking adjacent to the dual carriage way, then at a push you might just possibly get 100 cars parked, I really would be interested because I was told that lower area was for loading and unloading delivery vehicles. If its customer parking, then the secret is going to be.......how to persuade people to drive down it.

Apart from the purely mercenary (of whom there are some everywhere) from what I have heard and read the only Cypriots who like the current version of "progress " are some of the younger generation, influenced by "the American dream". Unfortunate progress is not just tall buildings - you must have culture, laws, law enforcement and attitudes to go with them and they do not seem to have realised that . You cant have your cake and eat it - you cant keep a relaxed , happy go lucky Meditteranean culture, with state of the art development and heavy traffic

we are currently getting the worst of both worlds. Hard luck on those whose home is here, whatever their country of origin

As for moving elsewhere that is becoming somewhat tiresome as the response of people here to a view they disagree with. I cant even get to the shops for food please dont be silly and offensive.

Yes it probably does! The postal system was installed a long time ago , and my guess is that they have not updated it to allow for the increase in post generated by the number and amount expatriates (particularly Brits) since 2004, let alone what the newer non Brit expats are using in the last few years. But dont blame theTRNC entirely, Royal Mail is not as perfect as people seem to think in retrospect, a lot of correspondents get the address wrong or amount of postage wrong,, and I explained in my post other reasons for it getting lost, I think a lot of people who come here and expect it to be just like the UK could help by being more understanding of local ways!

Going back to the SUBJECT at hand - the New Mr Pound.....

I went there this afternoon:
- parked without any problem and quite a few spaces available.
- clearly they are planning on having more parking area (already HEAPS more than the one in town and no-one complains about that)
- they are still sorting things out but wanted to get the place opened for New Year
- there IS a LIFT to ALL FLOORS (just ask as it is just past the information desk on the ground floor)
- the slope outside to go up to the entrance is NON-SLIPPERY, rough marble not shiny surface (I had no problem walking down it when it was raining and I hate slopes without handrails - even with handrails I often slip on the tiles)
- if you suggest they put a handrail there I am sure it will be addressed fairly soon
- if there is anything you can't see and are looking for then ask an assistant - there are loads of very helpful people in there
- there are also a lot of new and interesting things in this shop that you can't find in the others so definitely worth a visit

For all of you who have criticised the shop, I would suggest that instead of moaning about the shop on this forum, why not make useful suggestions to the staff at the information desk in the store. They would be very happy to take on constructive comments and are keen to make this a success.

They are currently working flat out to get things done and are the first to admit there is still a lot to be done.
Stop criticising and be constructive for a change!!!

It is a shame that many use this forum to moan.

Should have added....

If you need wheelchair access this shop is excellent.
- slope to front entrance
- good space between aisles
- lift to all floors
- many helpful assistants on all floors

My only moan and genuine worry, is the people who (even yesterday when there were quite a few parking spaces on show) still insist on parking on the dual carriage way. The angle of access and exit are a worry as well. Haven't had the need to go in and purchase anything since it opened.

Went yesterday, no problems either parking to the front of the store or being able to safely join the by pass. The store is lovely with plenty of room between isles however found it to be more like China Bazaar than the old pound shop in town and as already mentioned no dog treats at this store and very little at the old store so now on the lookout for somewhere that sells cheap dog treats as have 3 to treat.

Sorry off topic, just quickly for gary@shirley, if they are near Karakum there is a market in the carpark of Lemar there and a lady who sells home made dog treats , claim to be much healthier than the commercial ones as welll as cheaper.She is on holiday just now but will be back in a week or two, I will try to remember to put a note (on the doggy forum) here then.

Meanwhile (I also have three) I am going to try to make them myself : there are easy recipes on the Internet and a lot of advice on what is good for dogs. (biscuits, though, not rawhide chews)

Came by just an hour ago people dodging the traffic crossing both ways two near misses and a police speed check just 100 metres past the store they just watched. There will certainly be a few dead bodies spread over the road there soon

Went today very nice shop spread out over 3 floors, there are toilets but you have to go through the cafe, then down stairs, the toilets are very clean. A few people in the shop, not many cars. Wish them success.
