The benefit of trees
The following is an extract from the BBC's reporting on the plans to plant a new forest in Northern England.
"Planting many more trees, woods and forests will deliver a better environment for all - locking up carbon on a large scale, boosting wildlife habitat and greening our towns and countryside.
"Trees are some of our most cherished natural assets and living evidence of our investment for future generations.
"Not only are they a source of beauty and wonder, but a way to manage flood risk, protect precious species and create healthier places for us to work and live.
Ok so there is some political hype in that - but it is a fact that trees are beneficial to human health, and help bind the soil and protect from erosion. There is also evidence that deforestation may be contributing to climate change. (NB another report says that Australia is experiencing its hottest summer in about 40 years as a result of climate change)
Why, oh why, when even the daft Brit politicians are realising the dangers of our modern way of life and actuallly apparently taking steps to counterbalance it, or the powers that be in North Cyprus allowing the profileration of gas guzzling vehicles and above alll, allowing developers to cut down their greatest asset and replace them with buildings, roads and concrete.

Re: The benefit of trees
In our little village in the North West we have seen a difference in wildlife preservation due to nature parks being made where barren land was the norm, we have three nature parks with lovely walks through forests lots of rabbits, hares and bird life now, dog walkers respect the area and pick up the dog poo and bin it, the council empty the bins regular, the farmers fields are edged with wild flowers and grasses it really has made a difference, so this is good news for the North.

Watch this amazing video about planting trees and the benefits to the eco system....

Maybe we can encourage farmers here to do the same?

What a wonderful example RAZ, thanks for posting it.
Unfortunately here we are not only losing trees but farmers! I understand that the previously very popular deaf and dumb farmer in Ozankoy is either giving up or cutting down his operations: the cost of living has defeated him and now on top people (presumably the ones who live in the "posh" houses where there used to be olive trees) have been complaining about the alleged smell. He has been here for over twenty years to my own knowledge but now these get rich newcomers (presumbaly I don t really know who lives in these houses) are forcing him out. Less healthy free range meat and dairy products and more expensive unhealthy imported stuff.
And if anyone says "progres" I shall scream so loud you will hear me in Lapta

Another wonderful story Joffra - now THAT is what I cal progress!
Could someone tell the President of the USA that is the sort of wall to build!
Or seriously closer to home what about a wall of trees or better a forest spanning the border in Cyprus, land donated by both communities and tothe benefit of the Island as a whole?

Re: The benefit of trees
If it is the Deaf and Dumb Shepard who normally rides around on his scooter and also has one brother with limited speech capabilities but the biggest grin you will ever see, then he has a patch of land very close to Rafters. Used to have cows there as well as living there with the sheep but lost them a couple of years back. Nice guys the lot of them and truly helpful in many ways. I wonder if the rest of the family will give up on their sheep/goat herds as well, as they are all getting on a bit now and the younger generation are only interested in eating the sheep and not where the sheep actually come from! It was bound to happen as the need for land to build houses on due, to procreation of the species, has caused a requirement for more living accommodation that in turn has expanded the boundaries of towns and villages. Can't blame it all on 2004 but I guess some people will rather than admit that life must go on and things will change. As for houses in a modern world being "Posh", I guess you could call a mud hut "Posh" if your normal dwelling was a cave - it is a matter of interpretation I feel as I see no "Posh" houses anywhere near the farm in question - just modern houses.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Yes that is the one Waddo. Their herds of sheep and goats wandering in searchof new pastures have been one of the lovely sights in Ozankoy for years, and I think a lot of swallows and repeat tourists , as well as residents, would miss them and their cheery greetings, but I suppose the farm is not picturesque enough for the vandals. I pass it on the scooter and I never noticed the smell.
The need to build houses is NOT in this case due to procreation, it is due to greed and too much immigration!
Compared to some of these newly build monstrosities my house IS cave, but I prefer it! I was referring to the partly built development where a beautiful olive grove was destroyed on the road from Ozankoy to Erdener, and if I was taller and stronger I would be very tempted to write rude words on the offensive and self promoting posters whichnow surround the site and block what was once a place of beauty.
Now 2004 is not whollyresponsible for the adverse changes but it is a large factor, and was the start and probably inspiration!
As for progress see my earlier comments Can you hear me screaming?
