New Reservoir being constructed in Akdeniz Forest

I notice that a large new reservoir is being dug near to Kalkanli, north of the picnic area. I assume it is where the recent fire destroyed a large patch of vegetation. Can one of our friends on here explain the need, or the thinking behind this, please. I say this because it is quite close to another large reservoir north of the university near Kalkanli. I'm all for it, great for wildlife.

Am I talking to myself here? I take it from all the views and lack of comment that this project is news to most people or comes under the Official secrets Act (TC version).

Maybe it will be connected to Gecitkoy as some sort of overflow facility ?

It's a major infrastructure project Frontalman.....surely you don't expect much response do you ?...

It's certainly a big site. I asked if they were building a new university and they told me it was a "baraj". This was before the sign went up on the main road, by the way.

I did not reply because I dont know the area, but if you want comment , just a thought, maybe they think we will get so much water from Turkey we will need extra storage capacity, or the people who presumably will be coming here to fill as these horrible high rise flats will need a lot of water!

Or perhaps they were excavating to locate a cable or a pipe and forgot to stop digging

Considering where it is, perhaps it is being made so that farmers can have a constant supply of water?
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

As it is fairly close to the rich fertile soil beyond Guzelyurt, it may be specially designed to get water to the citrus farmers more easily. I had thought of that but was hoping one of our Cypriot contributors might know a little more. It's obviously costing a good bob or two to dig, given the number of trucks involved.

So does it look as though they are actually constructing a Dam (baraj) to trap water and form a reservoir, or are they really 'digging out' a reservoir - from what you could see?

I will try to get more information from my TC friends and get back to you. I was told about the project but did not understand it fully as was told they will be tunneling under Kankanli to supply free water for agriculture on the other side of Kankanli. It would make sense if all on the same level, tunnel and reservoir, to avoid pumping and just rely on gravity supply.

Cheers John, it makes sense now. Makes you wonder where the money is coming from though. How's the golf by the way?

Well there's a blooming big hole, but not that deep at the moment. If it's just a place for temporary storage before it's pumped further afield then I guess it doesn't have to be too deep. The sign on the road shows a large circular machine/borehole at the northern end of the workings and there is a separate smaller pit to accommodate it, which I spotted on my visit. I thought it might be the means to extract water from the water table at first, but I guess it must be there as a secondary pumping system. I must admit I have never stopped to look closely at the sign on the road, and only base my thinking and observations on the images imprinted on my brain whilst flashing past at 90 mile per hour!

You've sussed that my Reliant Robin won't go that fast! You're right, that's some capacity. Seems like overkill to me. Be interesting to see what develops. I must admit I do admire the way they get things done here, very little prevaricating and crash, bang wallop let's get on with it.
