Police warn of counterfeit notes in circulation
According to http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/polis-sa ... 51842.html the police are warning the public to be wary when receiving 200-TL notes. Apparently, banknotes, all with the serial number A 054 622 524, have been discovered in Girne and Mağusa. Anyone who finds themselves in possession of these notes or has any information on the matter should immediately inform the police.
By the way, I’m now working in China, so I don’t have that much opportunity these days to look at the KKTC news websites ... but for a change I did today ... and thought you guys might appreciate me passing on this information.

I have never seen a TL 200 note!
And have had big wads of cash out the bank, but they have never given me one.(Oooeeer missus ).
What do they look like, and do the denominations go any higher than TL 200?

When I go to the bank and draw out money the young teller always used to try to give me 200TL notes and I always had to ask her to give me smaller denominations, now when she sees me she always smiles and doesn't bother with the 200TL notes

Yep, I'm teaching Further Maths in an A level college in Harbin, a city of about 10 million in the north-east of the country.Keithcaley wrote: He's a Mathematician

There are very few signs of the "Communist" state anymore - even here, a long way from Beijing or Shanghai, I have been quite shocked by the sight of so many (real) Rolex shops. Yet, there is also so much poverty to be seen - every morning on my way to school I pass window-less garages, that are both workplaces and homes for whole families. As you would imagine, it is to the children of the Rolex-wearers that I give lessons. However, even these relatively spoilt children are a joy to teach ... discipline problems are certainly not an issue here in China.
In any case, I'd better get back to preparing this worksheet on Critical Path Analysis - Keith can tell you what that's all about

Hi Ian - I used to be in Nanchang in Jiangxi - teaching English! Loved it - but like you found the difference between the haves and have nots very striking - but the have nots all working diligently to try and get it - somehow!! In the 4.5 years I was there the number of private cars passing me in the centre of the city in a 5 min period could be counted on ones hands - by the time I left there were nose to tail, showing how what was meant to be a very poor city was changing.
Sorry if Ive gone off thread everyone!! I was given a load of 200s by a money changer a while ago and they took a bit of shifting -had to keep asking odd shopkeeper for 2 for 1, as it were - but I hope they were not duds!!

Philoz. If you have never seen a 200 TL note, when you suffer some in the future please pass them on to me as I have seen many and will be able to validate them for you. If they are not returned to you take it as read that they are deemed
hooky and will have been destroyed by me to save you the bother. If you get a similar offer from KC please ignore him as he has thicker glasses than me and can run faster !

To keep you updated on this story, in http://www.gundemkibris.com/piyasada-sa ... 43998h.htm it reports that a man was arrested on Saturday for being in possession of these counterfeit 200-TL notes. Apparently, Fuat Gürbulak handed over one of the notes to buy a 15-TL toy gun at a gift shop in Girne's Vakıflar Pasajı. The police were alerted and, after his hotel room was searched, more of the counterfeit notes were discovered. Gürbulak has been remanded in custody awaiting trial.

One more point:
In the opening paragraph of this latest report it writes of a large number of counterfeit 200-TL notes in circulation, many with the serial number A 054 622 524. That of course would imply there are counterfeit notes out there not with that number. So, just checking the serial number is not sufficient.
In any case, have a pleasant Tuesday ...

Ian! You have beaten me to it! I have always been tempted to go to China for couple of years but never had the courage. I am sure you have done the best thing. Perhaps you should tell me more about it and I might join you

Hi there ÖzerbigOz wrote:Ian! You have beaten me to it! I have always been tempted to go to China for couple of years but never had the courage. I am sure you have done the best thing. Perhaps you should tell me more about it and I might join you
I don't know if it was that courageous - in the world of international teaching, there are generally locals employed by the schools to sort out any difficulties we might encounter ... and here in Harbin, that is very much the case. For example, if I need a driver to take me to the airport, someone in our admin office will find one immediately ... and at a good rate ... if there's a problem with the plumbing in my flat, again it is sorted within hours, etc, etc.
Virtually all of our students are Chinese, most of whom are studying 'A' levels so as to attend universities in the UK. As one would expect, they are exceptionally hard-working and very polite. I just have to concentrate on presenting the subject material in the best possible way. To be honest, preparing lessons for one or two of the Further Maths modules has required me to really study again - for example, this is the first time I have ever taught some of the subject material in the D1 module. Yes, I studied it at university, but that was over 25 years ago! Yes, I'm also teaching the Core modules, but it is the teaching of S2 and particularly D1 that I find so much more stimulating ... all in an environment where classroom management means helping the students, not ensuring they're on task.
Özer, I'll be back in Cyprus for a few weeks in January/February and in the Summer ... so maybe we can have a chat then.
I apologise to anyone who might think Özer and I have taken the thread off-topic. With regard to the counterfeit notes, there are apparently still some in circulation, and the police are advising the public to be cautious when receiving any 200-TL notes from banks or döviz bureaus. For the time being it's probably best to ask the teller to give you the cash in smaller denominations.
