Skype paid for calls to uk

Sadly mother in law cannot get the hang of messenger what’s app or Skype on her tablet so I thought I would try paid for Skype so I can ring her normal telephone.

Do I have to get a number before I start?

I get an option on the Skype app on iPad to buy the £4.99 Credit on the Skype app and it seems that’s all I have to do but The help pages say different things and there are packages etc on the website that don’t appear on the app.

Ultimately is it cheaper than phoning a landline in the uk?

I use paid for Skype all the time to phone Uk and Turkey. It is very cheap. I do have a number but I'm pretty sure you don't HAVE to have one, only if you want people to call you from a landline etc. A very good idea for you to contact MiL.

As Laura B says, you don't need a 'Skype Number', just put some credit on your Skype account.

The last time that I checked, calls to UK landlines using Skype from anywhere in the World cost 1.4p per minute, and calls to UK mobiles were 14p per minute (both plus VAT).

The details will all be on the Skype website, and calls are priced, based on where you are calling TO - not on where you are calling FROM...

For simple usage such as you describe, you can ignore all of the complicated options and 'plans'

No you don't need a number. I have used it a lot over the past years and never had one.

But because it is now owned by Mr Gates and his merry men and women, the instructions have become more difficult as you would expect..... I'm not aware of any major changes since MS stepped in but am not really positive.

https://secure.skype.com/calling-rates/ ... anguage=en#

That link will give you the rates for calling the UK; it is always cheaper to call a land line, you then avoid the mobile operators charges. See the link: 2.8c per min for landlines up to 12.1 for mobiles (about 2p to 9p).

You just need to get money (keep it low - if you are calling land line it will last for ages - I do the automatic top-up thingy but there is really no need to) into your account. Then when you go into Skype you see your picture top left (if you have one) then four little icons to the right of that. there is one with ten dots: three threes and a one. Hit that and chose the UK on the drop down and enter number without the country code. And the cost of calls to a country are fixed no matter where you are in the world. If you put in 5 bucks and call a landline you will have nearly 3 hours of talk time.

Sorry Keith - you got in while I was typing - obviously not as fast as you!

That happens to me a lot, probably 'cos my explanations tend to be rather long winded and (as has been pointed out) pedantic

If of course you are talking to someone who already has Skype, then is FREE. Once upon a time you couldn't use UK 0800 numbers, but it appears you can now. I keep getting messages asking if I want the new improved updated version and I ALWAYS click on NO. But even after 8 months of this the computers still keep on. My version is simple and easy to use and I don't want another from Mr Gates and his colleagues.

I buy the european package at £35 per anum and can phone any landline in europe. I also have a number which is about £17 per year so that anyone can ring me using my UK number, no matter where I am in the world. Works well.
