Builders Tricks.

50 mtrs from my home there is a new build on a half Donum plot, which is pretty much complete (after the usual 2 years or so).

Today a JCB arrived and started to clear the land on the adjoining plot. My first thoughts were that it would be another new build but thought it strange that there was no Tipper lorry in support to remove the debris so it would need to be picked up twice.

Then I recognised the builder of the completed new build giving instructions to the JCB driver. All of the debris and scrub was pushed to the boundary of the plot. and then the driver started to excavate the soil and tipped it over the wall along the boundary of the new build, there must have been around 20 bucket fulls.

Then the JCB returned to the boundary and pulled all of the debris back over the excavated land to hide what had been done.

If you had a new build with perhaps just an inch or two of soil over the subsoil on your garden area that wont grow anything now you know why you had to buy some decent soil.

Been the practice in UK too. I remember growing up in a council estate 40 years ago and forever digging up rubble when gardening.

we moved into a new council house in '53. Dad started to dig the garden, hit something hard, dug round it in ever increasing circles to uncover a bucket off a dumper. it eventually became a fish pond

It wasn't just on council estates my parents bought the show home from a major UK builder but they made them remove all the rubble in the back garden after threatening legal action

Ours is the same in Alsancak 14 years ago. 3" of top soil and that's your lot. Hence a graveled garden with loads of pots. We did once try and plant a largish shrub, with the gardener using a pick axe. After an hour he gave up. There must have been a 5ft square plug of concrete under that particular part of the garden. Common practice I'm afraid.

Woman walks I to a cyprus hardware store checking out tiles...shop owner offers to find a tiler...this is a whole house...
Tiler gives me a price...then comes to look at the job..price now doubles as it involves preparing inside floors. Not a problem
Gave him the plans to do the calculations...his calculations are 280 sq m no bathrooms. He prices me on this...i do my own calculations...comes to under 250 including bathrooms
Outside area no pre floor levelling so basic price is calculated.
Internal with pre floor a different price is calculated...
Our prices are very different...he says he can't do it at my price. This price is based on his prices...he wants me to pay the tiler for area that does not exist.
He told me It's the Cypriot way ....we do it different in Cyprus...sadly he has lost my custom
