Power surge protection

I have been advised that the use of power surge protection / regulators are a good idea in North Cyprus to protect devices, tv’s etc.

What are people’s thoughts on this? Good idea or not necessary?

Personal opinion is that (as far as I know) they do no harm - and could prevent expensive damage if a surge occurs....
So, although I've not gone for the more expensive equipment (fitted in distribution panels etc), I've bought several surge protection adapter sockets - cheaper than buying new laptop/TV/freezer etc.......

The power supply can at best be described as flaky... voltage fluctuations can be harmful to many devices. Get the best voltage regulator you can afford. Simple surge protection is not good enough.

On a new build I would have it designed in to cover the whole home - well worth doing.

You might also consider a UPS to protect router, computer/laptop and tv equipment. Keeps the internet going for a few hours longer, depending on what size you go for during a power cut, which is a big bonus, and also charges up laptop/tablet/phone.

We bought ours from Elektrokur and Marks World.

Tektan also a good supplier....

Good that this subject comes up here...
a UPS unit or voltage regulators are not SPDs (surge protection device)
All SPDs need a proper connection to earth.
Eg, a “point of use” type 3 SPD or one installed in the main distribution box is usually connected to the “house earth”, which often is a “cypriot solution” with 2,5 mm² cable and an iron rod.
Best would be to have a SPD protection class 1+2 (surges and lightning.. although it is said that no device can give you 100% protection against a “direct hit”) installed directly at your meter box incl a new earth rod connected with a 16mm² cable.
Then you may can install a SPD class 2 (surges) in your distribution box and /or a “point of use” SPD (type 3) , eg, for TV and PC and fridge.
Separate protection for coaxial and LAN cables is needed.
A single phase SPD type 2 cost approx 60 euros, a SPD type 1 +2 comes to 100- 150 euro and a three phase SPD type 1+2 approx 200 euros.
all class III/IV..
a three phase SPD type 1 + 2, class I/II can come to 500 euros and more.

I would recommend Ali Tektan he can supply unit that will cover your building if you have a place to install it. If not he will supply a smaller version which he will recommend for the job.
