A translation from a Newspaper site. Does anyone know where "Tusk area" is please. A no swim notice is in place. Have googled it but no result.
Many thanks.

"The Ministry of Health announced that routine sampling of the samples from the Tusk area exceeded normal values as a result of the last sea water analysis conducted in June".
In the written statement made by the Ministry of Health, it was stated that the institutions were passed with the competent authorities and it is said that "it is important for the health of our people not to swim in this region until the results of the second analysis come out".

Only stabbing a guess here, but it's the Püsküllü region, so take it, it's somewhere down from Püsküllü Mevkii on the map. https://mapcarta.com/33637032

With the increase of population in Girne and the non-modernisation of the sewage system I would not swim anywhere close to Girne.

Went to Alagadi Beach last week, much rubbish, plastic etc floating around a absolute disgrace The trainee divers came out of the water with a big sack of plastic and rubbish, and other holidaymakers collecting rubbish with plastic bags. Dont think they will be back next year for holidays would you?

Brian and Becker, bear in mind that any West-facing beach such as Mare Monte will inevitably collect some of the rubbish thrown into the sea anywhere West of Gibralter which is then blown into our little corner of the Mediterranean by the prevailing Westerly winds.

The recent high winds have accentuated this of course, but the Belediye should have finished the clean-up by now...

I have to admit I am getting to the stage as to whether to warn family who are staying in Alsancak in June with a 6 year old in tow, to swim in the sea or not. At least rental house has a decent pool with it,

I went on a boat-trip from the Old Harbour last week. Three times the Captain tried to drop anchor in three different bays but we were surrounded by floating rubbish and a lot more of it was below the surface.

Having read about the sea water tests I agree I will be sticking to the pool for the foreseable future.

I went swimming earlier this week before I saw this warning, I swam along the "sea wall" in front of the Vouni palace hotel and noticed that there are 2 x 6" diameter pipes inside larger concrete pipes which have crumbled away in parts. They run off into the direction of the lighthouse at the entrance to the new harbour, I don't know how far out they go but I expect from readings obtained for this area, they may well be carrying untreated sewage and discharging it just outside the new harbour! Needless to say I will not be swimming there any time soon, maybe never again. When they build the new hotel on the Karakum sea front. will the Akdeniz be renamed ""ooops" creek"?

On top of the plastic and the filthy dirty water etc I gather from C2D last week there is an article in Kibris WARNING of the highly poisonous Weaver Fish which is now prevalent all around the coast. Apparently is burrows itself in the sand with the spines sticking out and for people with some allergies, heart conditions and the like the results can be life changing. Apparently it goes on to explain about initial treatment needed immediately.

My house pool is looking more agreeable by the day.

Safety is a dubious and debatable term. Hotel and private pools could be considered 'safe' from human excrement and plastic contamination but they have a risk of accidental drowning, slipping on wet tiles etc. The Karpaz beaches are clean, the locals tell me but 'clean' is another dubious term here when applied to the TRNC. Not sure about the RoC beaches if the whole island is to be debated upon.

Karpaz beaches are just as polluted particularly with shredded plastic dumped by ships

There are 64 blue flag beaches in the south, so there evidently are places to swim on the whole island, but it would appear that not in the north.

How does a country apply for Blue Flag status for its beaches I wonder? Surely you don't self-determine if your beaches fit the bill. If that was the case then EVERY beach, bar none, would be awash with flags in the North. There were people swimming around the Blue Song area today and of course the water looked glorious and clear, sadly that doesn't give an indication of the medical quality of the water does it?

Been to Oris Beach today. Water was as clear as could be,lots of swimmers of all ages. Downside was a couple with a young child, changed a loaded nappy & just left it at waters edge! However a immigrant(think Brit) told them about it,the bloke just picked it up & threw it maybe 60Cm up the beach.

A quote from that article: -

"Head of Kyrenia municipality, Nidai Gungordu has said “...The current system is built to handle waste from a town of 25,000 residents, whereas it is currently having to handle waste from a town of 80,000...”,

- and that was a year ago!

Just look at the buildings that have gone up in the last year...

Where's the sewage from that lot going to end up?

Just take a boat trip around the coast in front of the Merit Hotels and I guarantee you won't want to swim. Plenty of stools just floating on the surface of the water. Absolutely disgusting.

Could be wrong of course, but until all the flats become occupied I reckon the worst offenders are definitely the huge hotels fronting onto the sea. However even now there are parts of Girne town centre where the pong is dreadful at times. I had to close the car windows whilst waiting to pass the cross road area down from Georges.

What can you expect when you have thousands of properties being built on part on an island that couldn’t cope back in the early 2000s, when there was half the amount of properties, with water supplies and sewage waste problems. The hotels have always been a problem but the power of these hotel owners has no boundaries.
