David Davis the Brexit Secretary has resigned along with two others.

Interesting times ahead for the prime minister and the proposals currently being discussed for the U.K. leaving the EU.

Good man I say.

Great. Perhaps now Gove and Boris will follow suit and the seventeen million people who voted for Brexit will get what they voted for and not the soft fudge being proposed by Teresa May.

To me it seems that we triggered a 2 year deadline to agree terms with the EU and and have so far spent 15 months of that arguing amongst ourselves what it is we should be trying to negotiate with the EU within that 2 year deadline. Seems like a monumental mess to me.

It also seems self evident to me that any and every trade deal signed by a sovereign nation involves and requires by definition some degree of giving up sovereignty. This is the case be it the new wondrous trade deals we will be signing up to with all those non EU countries or be it with any deal we agree with the EU post our exit. A post brexit trade deal between the UK and the US will require some loss of UK sovereignty. Same with any other country we sign post brexit trade deals with. Yet those on the 'hard brexit' extreme seem to me to be arguing that any future trade relationship / deal between the UK and the EU that involves any limits on UK sovereignty at all means we have not left the EU and the will of the people has been thwarted. Just seems like pure nonsense to me. We can choose to go from a status with our current largest trade partner from one of the most comprehensive free trade arrangement in history to one of no trade deal at all if we like but if that is what we want then let's be honest about it.

I happen to think that the proposals agreed by cabinet last week are in the main a sensible way forward, but as ever the devil is in the detail. There are a couple of proposals which seem we will still be an EU rule follower rather than setting the rules.

We await to see how the EU will react. That I think will then set the tone for how the U.K. will respond. A more positive less conflicting reaction and things will move along. If they continue in what many see as a hard line approach then I can see the pro Brexit MPs becoming more vocal and demands to walk away will be heard.

As for David Davis’s replacement, likely to be Gove. Boris will remain silent as he has done for a while......he doesn’t want to rock the boat as his political career is more aligned to the leadership of the Conservative party. Jacob Rees - Mogg will continue to be the most vocal and pick apart the proposals.

Think May will continue her stance and ride this one out, the Conservative party in no way want an election now, they are clinging to power as it is. Don’t think there will be other dissenters in the cabinet deciding to go.

Labour will milk this for all its worth of course.

PoshinDevon do you think post brexit the UK can sign trade deals with the US or India or anyone else that do not require the UK to agree to do anything differently that they would do them without such a deal ?

My understanding is that the U.K. could sign trade deals, providing the deals fall within or conform to the rules already set in place by the EU.

By this I mean let’s say the UK were to buy flour from the USA.....the flour must conform to the standards laid down by the EU. This despite the facts that the standards currently in place as determined by the USA may be more than sufficient. Now whether that would work or not given the supposed pages and pages on what constitutes the EU standard for flour and every other item, I have no idea.

Think it could be a barrier or make things significantly more difficult to do deals with those outside of the EU.

As I said, I think the majority of the proposals agreed by cabinet last week seem on the surface sensible, however there are a few that are so light on detail it does concern me as to whether the more hard line In the Brexit camp will accept them. I just feel that if the noises from the EU to these proposals are not showing compromise then it’s going to be hard to force a deal thro.

The U.K. is for the first time on the front foot with the ball in the EU court. It’s taken to long and not given all that some would want but how the EU respond in the next few weeks is crucial.

I think that the biggest problem and therefore failure in this whole sordid mess of Brexit is that the Government is more concerned with the votes it will lose and therefore the next election than it is in the future of the country and it's residents. Once again it seems that Government will only do what they feel is good for Government and votes and here I was under the understanding that the people voted them into power and therefore paid them to do a job that they promised they would do once in power? The only thing they seem interested in is staying power. At least Davis is holding true to the mantra he will have learnt in the SAS reserves - Lead, Follow or get out of the way! Not being a follower nor being allowed to lead he has taken the only remaining option! I wonder who will be next to leave till the Government finally get to their fatted calf and heap all of the failures onto Mrs May?

I can not believe that any member of any political party in the UK truly believe that the UK will get anything near what it proposes to have post Mar 2019. When you take on the might of the EU you can demand all you want but if one insignificant member votes against it then it will be a NO from the EU and the wheel will start to turn again. Expect a No Deal and Walk Away in the end. Then it is back to the good old days for all those who voted to leave and good luck to everyone. To me, the whole thing has been a fools mission, very much like NTV, you have paid your money and now you have nothing!!
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

... how the EU respond in the next few weeks...

the complete paper is not out yet.. but my guess is that "the EU" ( meaning: 27 member states) will say
"....thats excactly the cherry picking we can not agree to..."

It's all part of the ploy for a 'no deal' exit. Brussels will find fault and continue to squeeze so this has no legs. Parliament can only vote on a deal if there is one. Very clever actually. We're out!!!!

Boris resigned because he cannot go along with a watered down version of what was promised he will now be hoping that they can get enough Tory MPs [47] to bring about a vote of no confidence in Mrs May and call for a leadership challenge and i guess Boris would be the favourite to win that.

Polling company YouGov has been asking Conservatives who they want as their next leader, and here are the results:
Sajid Javid
Ruth Davidson
Jacob Rees-Mogg
Boris Johnson
Jeremy Hunt
Michael Gove
...A sterling crew.....

Good riddance Boris.

Unfortunately it is not the last we shall see of this buffoon. All part of his plan to de-stabilise the party into a leadership election which he will be jockeying very hard to become the succeeding Pm - Lord help the future of the UK.

They got together at Chequers, May said "Look, we'll put this forward as our position, then you and Boris resign, David, saying we're giving too much away, then when that Barnier twat finds fault we can say frig you, we're off - NO DEAL!"

If I was TM I would say sod the lot of you and resign or call an election. The biggest problem the tories have is an insecure majority. The biggest problem with brexit it the vote was to close to call. No strength in the mandate for brexit no strength in the mandate for government. Much as I think it would be a disaster if JC got in I think the shower in the UK deserve it. When the vote was made it should have been put up or shut up, I was a remainer but accept the vote and would like to see a proper brexit and not a watered down one.
Some are wise and some otherwise.....

Theresa May misjudged it last year when calling a snap election and is not likely to do the same thing again

I'm afraid our PM's proposal is designed to pacify as many as possible including the EU powerhouse.
Certainly the BREXIT brigade should be very disappointed given the continued power retained by Brussels.
No freedom of movement but EU citizens can enter for work or Education. Very little change there then!
No customs union but a facilitated arrangement whatever that means.
Without free trade as now . Trade will suffer by virtue , its more difficult
servicers not included. Good by the City of London financial power house I think.

In essence we are still in the EU in my opinion but in a very much weakened position than pre referendum. Clearly this view is shared by cabinet members resignations.
The cloud of uncertainty remains and the damage brought on by this continues to gather momentum as March 2019 looms.

The wait and see brigade and uninformed will surely hold onto hope and still await the massive influx of funds for the NHS. At some point sooner the real loss will become apparent even to those with their heads somewhere dark.

Without doubt the Brussels powerhouse will capitalize on the ever weakening UK government. The UK are the weaker team and its no semi final re run where we can come back and have another go in four years.

BREXIT. A poor uninformed referendum. Brexit was crucified at Chequers last week but most haven't realized it yet.
