Allowing the public to visit submarine in Girne on Friday
Actually, besides the submarine, there will also be a frigate and an assault boat, that the Turkish Navy will allow the public to visit on Friday ... of course this is all part of the 20 Temmuz celebrations.
http://www.kibrispostasi.com/c35-KIBRIS ... k-18072018
In the Kıbrıs Postası report, they don't mention the need to be a Türk or TC to visit the vessels, but of course that is a distinct possibility.
The submarine Çanakkale, the frigate Barbaros and the assault boat Mızrak will be on show In the new harbour. Apparently, for the frigate, the navy will lay on a shuttle service for the public, but the assault boat and the submarine will be moored so that the public can access them without a shuttle.
The viewings on Friday will take place from 10.00 to 11.30 and from 14.00 to 16.30.
Please don't blame me if you turn up to the harbour, but are not allowed to board because you're not a Türk or TC - as I wrote above, there is nothing in the Kıbrıs Postası report on that matter.
By the way, the frigate Barbaros was involved in the rescue of the refugees earlier today.
And of course, at around 6pm on Friday, there'll be a few aeroplanes in the sky.

Years ago, we got as far as the steps leading to the Frigate and were turned away in a very brusque manner. "you are banned" Really did make me feel welcome!! This was probably 10 years ago, Never tried again.

A couple of years ago we tried to get on with the grandsons but were told extremely politely that we had to be citizens.

We went on aboard the assault boat Mirzak earlier this year when it was in Famagusta and open for public viewing. We didn’t have our Kimlik with us and weren’t asked for it. The crew onboard were great. They found two officers who spoke English and gave us a personal tour. At the end of it they gave us Tea each and as it was their lunch time even asked if we wanted anything to eat.

I have to ask this MrsD - eventhough they behaved like perfect gentlemen, is "we" possibly two or more attractive women that the sailors were very keen to see walking around their boat?MrsD wrote:We went on aboard the assault boat Mirzak earlier this year when it was in Famagusta and open for public viewing. In any case, my wife and I intend to visit the submarine tomorrow morning, TC kimliks in hand, and we'll ask if non-TCs/Turks can use their own kimliks/passports to board ... and we'll try to relay our findings to you.
Maybe the decision of the police there to allow non-TCs/non-Turks to board at any one time depends on factors such as the length of the queue they see ... or, if it's the sailors making the decision, the length of the dress they see

Not sure me turning up in a mini skirt would increase my chances of being let on board ? Then again ?iancrumpy wrote: ... or, if it's the sailors making the decision, the length of the dress they see

I don't know Erol, I think you might be underestimating your feminine side. Give it a bash.

Non TC are not allowed. My sons school are going tomorrow and we have been told not to send my son as he will be refused. Bloody fuming.

madeincyprus, I can understand your feelings, but there isn't any point. We're foreigners, first, last and in the middle, and we're never allowed to forget it. Some people on this forum are for ever telling us, "if you don't like it, why don't you leave" I think they are cruel and thoughtless but we carry on don't we?

They are probably worried that Germans might spy and report back the specifications to the German firm who made it!madeincyprus wrote:Non TC are not allowed. My sons school are going tomorrow and we have been told not to send my son as he will be refused. Bloody fuming.

Let’s be sensible about this, the rules appear to be that non Turkish Cypriots are not allowed a tour of the submarine. I don’t see any reason why anyone should be fuming or upset.
In the UK even if the general public are allowed to board a naval vessel you can be assured that any tour would be of areas that were deemed to be non sensitive. There would be other areas where there would be no access at all.

Re: Allowing the public to visit submarine in Girne on Frida
So yeah, we turned up at the Customs Control Gate at about 10am. The police there, even with my TC kimlik, were unsure as to whether I would be able to board the vessels. So, they called someone and we were given the OK. After a group of 20 of us had gathered at the gate, they took us by bus to the submarine. After politely being told, when boarding the submarine, that "yabancılar" weren't allowed, we again showed my kimlik and were allowed through.In_msg_9_I wrote:In any case, my wife and I intend to visit the submarine, TC kimliks in hand, and we'll ask if non-TCs/Turks can use their own kimliks/passports to board ... and we'll try to relay our findings to you.)
So, without a Turkish or TC kimlik, it is very very unlikely one would be allowed into the submarine. However, on boarding the assault boat there was another TC-yabancı-karışık couple with us ... and so the sailors asked us if we wanted an English-speaking sailor to take us around. Following on from what MrsD and PoshinDevon wrote above, it seems they (at least the sailors are, not the police) are OK with "yabancılar" having a look around the non-sensitive areas of their warships, but their submarines are totally off limits ... but MrsD, they didn't offer us tea ... clearly I'm not as good-looking as your husband
By the way, I'm really glad I got to see the inside of the submarine - I'm amazed that so many can live in such a confined space for so long.

Though it is unlikely that in the UK the determining factor as to who is or is not allowed would be having British citizenship of not ? They would, I imagine, either allow anyone access or no one ?PoshinDevon wrote:In the UK even if the general public are allowed to board a naval vessel you can be assured that any tour would be of areas that were deemed to be non sensitive. Given the delicate political situation here I fully understand the zeal that is exercised when matters of security are at stake. I do think the little boy being separated from his classmates as being overkill, though.

Cannot answer your question fully. However what I can say is that when I served in HM Forces, I was involved in communications and at one time was working at a satellite communications station in Scotland, commonly referred to as the “golf ball” by the locals.
We were often approached by local organisations asking for a look around. Prior to any visit full details, names, address, passport info was required. This was sent up the food chain presumeablt for vetting/checks etc and once clearance given a date for a visit could be arranged. Again access was restricted to visitors. During my time there we did have a couple of refusals who were not allowed on site. We were never told why.
So for those fortunate to get on board the submarine I am sure it was appreciated.

Twenty five years ago some British railway workers were at arrested in Greece for plane spotting and just this week two more were jailed for photography of naval vessels
