Lock your car doors

Just a word of caution, while sitting in our car (hire car) this evening having just bought ice creams from Burger City in Lemar car park, a locall TC approached the car and as he brushed past the rear door he attempted to open the door all the doors were locked and he walked off. He walked towards the entrance then turned to walk away. I drove up to him and asked what do you want, you tried to open the door! He looked around carefully perhaps checking the situation out and said he wanted to go to Girne.

I don't believe that for one moment and suspect that had the door been unlocked he would have wanted more than a lift, haven't timed changed.

No I dont, it's possible he was a mainland Turk, what I am certain is, that if the car was not locked I would have been facing a very difficult situation

I suppose that he probably grew up in an environment where everyone was expected to give an lift to anyone that needed one.

I'm not going to start locking my car doors though - in this weather I leave the doors unlocked and the engine running when I go into a shop or an office, so that the aircon will keep the car cool

Yes Keith I'm sure this is simply a case of the cultural divide.... I always feel so guilty when I pass someone hitching but often i'm only going 500 yards before stopping at a Petrol station and then it would seem most odd to ask them to get out again.... I hardly ever lock my car but I don't leave it running.... I can't afford the fuel waste unlike you, you bloated plutocrat!

Paul I think you are worrying unnecessarily... i'm sure the chap was merely looking for a lift... In the UK I'd not be so sure but it is so safe here car thieves could have their pick of high-end Mercs and Beemers outside any supermarket 365 days a year - empty, car running and ready to go!

Sorry to say that I never lock my car doors, half of them don't lock anyway and more often than not I leave the keys in the ignition - work on the principle that if it is that easy to steal then nobody would really want it anyway. It pays to have an old banger (car) most of the time - lol. There is also a security system on the ignition lock! You have to have the knack of being able to turn an old worn out key in an equally old and worn out lock to get it to start in the first place!!!!

It’s not that long ago I advised my wife to keep all doors on the vehicle locked when driving,
however if she did forget and someone got in without being invited ,
either start screaming there and then or drive to a crowded area and repeat screaming or drive to nearest Police station as fast as possible and start screaming.

If any one gets into our car, uninvited, whilst my wife is driving they deserve everything they get! They would also have to be very fit to be able to catch the car whilst she is driving too - lol.

I was driving down from the top of Lapta one day and 2 Belediyere workers flagged me down for a lift down to the office, no sooner had I dropped them off then a woman stopped me and said police station. I was beginning to wonder if my car said Taksi on the top.
No problem though, I often give lifts as sometimes the buses are infrequent up in Karsiyaka and beyond.

I remember when back packing in Ireland I was given a lift by a real talkative character who told me I could travel the length and breadth of Ireland by hitch hiking. I said "but aren't you taking a risk picking me up, I could be an axe murderer". " What's the chances of that" he said. "fancy that 2 axe murderers in the same car at the same time, incredible"
