Bacon from pigs reared in the north probably in future
It would seem that the TRNC Ministry of Agriculture is to issue more licenses for pig farming in the north. The Minister said there is clearly a demand here and that public should not just have the option of frozen imported pork.

It pleasantly surprised me - what with the AKP’s increasing influence over things here, I expected to see more of the conservative Hala Sultan Schools here … not pig farms

I wrote “more” because in the report it writes that the current level of pig farming is “yok denecek düzeyde” which implies there is some, albeit very very little – it might just be at a level to allow the ministry to learn more about pig farming ... it's not clear from the report.iancrumpy wrote:It would seem that the TRNC Ministry of Agriculture is to issue more licenses for pig farming in the north.

In the Muslim country of the TRNC, pork, which is regarded as both sexually and physically harmful, will be encouraged by the Ministry.

That's google translate for you I'm afraid RAZR63 - in the original kibrisadahaber report it writes "hem dini açıdan hem de sağlık bakımından zararlı görülen" which actually means "is seen as harmful from both a religous viewpoint and one of health".RAZR63 wrote:https://www.kibrisadahaber.com/kktcde-d ... 32784h.htm.

Yeah, sağlık = health
Sex is not mentioned in the original report,

Clearly certain people at kıbrısadahaber don't think very highly of the Ministry's intention to encourage pig farming. The main headline they used was "KKTC'nin tek eksiği buydu!" - which literally means "this is the only thing missing in North Cyprus!" ... or less literally "This is all we need in North Cyprus!"
The photo chosen by the kıbrısadahaber team (1st below) also reflects their disapproval. Compare their photo with the 2nd photo chosen by haberkıbrıs for the same report. Also notice the exclamation marks everywhere in kıbrısadahaber photo.
It looks as though there could be some opposition to pig farming here.

I always buy our fresh bacon Gammon Pork etc. From Pork Shop Alsancak, Best Pork we have ever tasted. The full range. Not Frozen ???
Their Bacon is cheaper than the frozen Iceland Cardboard stuff.
Been using them for 11 years.

With Jonnie Lee on this one. Never buy that Iceland rubbish, where the slices are so thin you can read the newspaper through them. Pork shop in Alsancak is the place to go. Always buy large Gammon joints there for Christmas as well. Have to order in advance.

I'm not doubting the quality of the pork etc there, but at some stage of its import, provided it has not come illegally from the south, it would have to have been either frozen or processed - the TRNC Ministry of Agriculture is hoping to give you another option.Johnny Lee wrote:I always buy our fresh bacon Gammon Pork etc. From Pork Shop Alsancak, Best Pork we have ever tasted. It is debatable whether the word "fresh" can be used to describe the pork sold at "The Pork Shop" ... tasty as it may be.

Thousand or more pigs over the mountain in Karsiyaka, according to the owner of the Pork Shop a few years ago. Doubt the need for deep freezing to get them to the shop in Alsancak! Hope there is airco in their accommodation though....oh dear, doesn't bear thinking about.

Unless the "mountains" he referred to are the Troodos Mountains, I don't honestly think the owner there is telling the truth. According to the Minıster of Agriculture there is currently next to no pig farming in the north. Maybe the owner was jokingly referring to wild boar in the mountains, but their meat has a distinctly different flavour to that of pigs. I think it is almost certain that the meat in "The Pork Shop" has arrived on a container ship from Mersin.Retired wrote:Thousand or more pigs over the mountain in Karsiyaka, according to the owner of the Pork Shop a few years ago. But as stated above, I'm sure the meat there is wonderful.

Please look at msg 28 on this 2009 Cyprus44 thread http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/11280.asp . Is the owner called "Hamzal" or possibly "Hamza"? If so, then the owner could indeed be telling the truth ... and indeed it may be his herd (or whatever the group is called) of pigs "over the mountains at Karşıyaka". If it is the case, then I apologise ... my main purpose of this thread was to relay news that had been given to the Turkish-speaking community.iancrumpy wrote: I think it is almost certain that the meat in "The Pork Shop" has arrived on a container ship from Mersin.
Of course, all this means the Minister's recent statement, as to the amount of pig farming in the north, was a little inaccurate ... if indeed the figure of "a thousand or more pigs", as given in msg 9, is correct.
