Lower Enrolments

I heard it said today that NearEast was seeing significantly lower enrolments of Turkish students for the upcoming semester...due to the weak lira. 20,000 less students at that university. Not sure of the accuracy of the number, perhaps they meant "all universities" in the TRNC of students from Turkey.

I would think it was likely a reality as the students also have to find housing (which is notably higher than last year) along with increased costs of basics like food and electricity. Having said that, this is bound to have an impact on the continued decline of the economy here.

Meanwhile, lefcosia and surrounding villages are flooded with cars with greek plates, coming over the border to fill up their gas tanks. I imagine they are doing some shopping while they are up here as well - at least for cigs and liquor.

what else can be expected?

This is a translation from turkish newspaper
According to the initial determination of the YKS Placement Results, the depreciation of the TL resulted in the loss of students to the TRNC universities. Last year, 10 thousand 795 students settled in TRNC universities, this year, 8 thousand 178 students settled. 2 thousand 617 students were placed in less than last year's universities

So its saying 2617 less new enrolments . I read elsewhere that there are c 100000 students in trnc . I know a lot of the courses are four years . no doubt the authorities will at some point publish the figures they have all the data .there could well be 20000 less i was told last year that the number registering in famagusta was down so its not just this year its a two year trend clearly increasing as thebtl takes its toll. My understanding was that its free to go to university in turkey and in most cities rents will be a lot cheaper so its only the rich or those who get a scholarship. A lot of students i com across work full time in hotels etc must be tough .

I hope there is a boom in tourism to offset this for the economy . Thers definately mire greeks coming here now as i experienced yesterday waiting at metehan .
