I doubt that many of you will be surprised but I will report this anyway.

I was watching a UK tv programme which was a sort of a cookery programme and one of the contestants introduced himself;

''I am from Cyprus so obviously I am Greek.........

Need I say more?

There is no hope.

Oh, even more interesting is that he added later than he is married to a Turk!!!! FFS.

For those optimists hoping for a 'solution' don't hold your breath.

Which programme? Perhaps there is a webpage/instagram/whatsapp/whatever page where a reminder could be posted to highlight (or remind this person) that he is NOT a "greek", but a CYPRIOT - just like all the "native-born" people of this island - I would be happy to post and remind him of this fact....
I am more than happy to state to state that having been born in England, I am English - regardless of where my parents may have been born.....

I see no harm in persons being proud of their origins. This man may equally have said that he was Turkish Cypriot were that the case, this is, after all, an island with two languages and it will be several generations yet before either race call themselves Cypriots, if ever.

I am no champion of the ROC but cannot share the negative slant of this thread. If the man did use the word 'obviously' that was an unfortunate choice but i feel that his admission that he has married a Turkish lady is a far more important and positive statement that shows that not all GC's are bigoted and, furthermore, that admission makes him a brave man if he resides in the South where they will face a lifetime of sneers and jeers.

There in my opinion is the problem.

This is the island of Cyprus and the people are Cypriot.

The U.K. has the Scots, Welsh, Irish and English and yes there is this sense of identity and roots and whilst I appreciate some may disagree.......we are British. Everyone is equal and has a say...and again whilst some may disagree even if you are a minority that does not matter.

What is wrong with the world these days? Yesterday, I was accused of "obnoxious particulate dissemination of a probable hazard to health and the general comfort of all", no mention was made of the overpowering particulate dissemination of a fragrance that was strong enough to choke any unsuspecting passerby, indeed to have done so would have brought down upon me the wrath of the PPCP (Perfectly Politically Correct Person) who made the initial comment!

Now we have a guy on TV - which in itself must be a very nervous occasion for the uninitiated - saying he was from Cyprus so "obviously" he was Greek and being castigated for that comment. To the vast majority of people in the World, Cyprus is a Greek Island, they have never heard of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and have no idea whatsoever that this Island has been divided for generations. The fact he says he is married to a Turk is neither here nor there, to be more correct, did he say a Turkish Lady or just a Turk? Should we now jump on the same sex marriage band wagon to ensure we are not saying anything that will be objectionable to others?

Just what has brought us to this point in time where we have to be so careful of what we say, that normal conversation has all but died out? Freedom of speech has been all but dead for many years and I fear there is no way back, unless the WWW were to be closed down and all mobile devices rendered unusable for a period of time, until people actually learnt to speak to each other in truth and freedom once more.

OK, I admit it, I am guilty of emitting wind from my anus - I am human and all humans do the same thing because they have no option but to do it - I was walking along the beach and - gasp - I farted, what is more, it made a noise (well below the legal decibel range I may add)! I have lived here for many years now and both the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots do exactly the same thing and think nothing of it, to them it is the same as a sneeze but at a different end of the body!

If you were born in the Republic of Cyprus then why not say you are Greek?

I don't have a problem with that.

In any event, you can apparently self identify as anything you want these days. A pupil at my nephew's school in Kent has self identified as a cow and they let him graze on grass at lunchtimes (genuine story)

Trooper, No I did not miss the word, in fact when I posted I put that word in "" to highlight it. Perhaps you may wish to read that part again? By the way, I come from the United Kingdom - so "obviously" I am English! Now, I wonder if I have a Scottish accent or maybe it's Welsh or Irish??? Well actually, although I am not happy to admit it, my lineage is French/Dutch and not too long ago either. As this guy lives in Hastings now should he have said I come from Cyprus so obviously I am English? Like it or not, if his parents are Greek Cypriots and he was born in Cyprus then he can claim to be Greek and he should!

If you are from Northern Ireland you could never be British.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland....
United Kingdom (of England and Scotland)...usually deemed as also including the Principality of Wales....

I think you are all (or mostly) missing the point. At no stage has Cyprus ever been Greek and for him to say this on national TV is just another misleading part of the Greek propaganda machine that leads others to believe that Cyprus is Greek and Turks have no place there.
Yes, some Greek Cypriots lived on the island but before the Turks conquered it, they were serfs with no legal right over the land or allowed to practice their religion. The Turks freed them from their serfdom and allowed them all of their privaledges that they enjoy today.
Also to add, the imbalance of population only came in favour of the Greeks over Turks during the late 1800’s-early 1900’s, where many Greek nationals were shipped in to outnumber the Turks, all under the watchful eye of the U.K. the aim was to take the island from the Turks and enforce Enosis as they did with Crete.
So yes, I do find it offensive when some pillock makes such a statement and the rest of world’s bleeding hearts sympathise with the poor trodden down Greeks over Cyprus, especially when I know it was them that caused the situation we find ourselves in today.

"all under the watchful eye of the U.K."

I take it that it was only the Greeks that caused the situation then - nobody else of any nationality had anything to do with it?

On this Island we have both Greek and Turkish speaking Cypriots, one side has used propaganda to make the most of their plight and the other has kept quiet and tried to make a country of their own. I too find it offensive when somebody makes a statement and the rest of the world's bleeding hearts sympathise with the poor down trodden person. I can't find any instance - apart from here where the rest of the world's bleeding hearts have made a comment so I am quite happy that the propaganda machine has missed a beat or that people actually now understand what he meant by it.
