RBL POPPY APPEAL 2018

The RBL Kyrenia Branch is busy preparing for this year’s annual Poppy Appeal which gets underway on Sunday 21 October and lasts until Monday 12 November.

First up is a new event in the shape of a poppy walk to the east of Girne. The first time ever 3.5km walk commences at 10.30am on Sunday 21 October and finishes at the Grease Monkey in Çatalköy with the registration desk open from 9.30am and an entry fee of 15tl on the day. The bar will be open for drinks and in addition there will be a poppy shop stall selling poppies and other RBL items, and Jenny Scott the new membership secretary will be available for membership renewals or new members to join. Anyone can join the RBL you do not need to have served in the Armed Forces.

Next up is the official Poppy Appeal launch outside the Girne Belediyesi between 11am and 3pm on Thursday 25 October with the branch Poppy Appeals Officer Jill Bell and her helpers in attendance. So do call in and buy your poppy and other poppy related items and say hello. This event will be repeated at the same place and time a week later on Thursday 1 November.

Later that evening the annual ‘Fun Quiz & Lucky Card Draw’ takes place at the Fez in Çatalköy from 7.30pm. Tickets are 45tl which includes chicken & chips. A coach is organised from the west at 20tl each departing Karsiyaka at 6.45pm with pick up points en route, to book phone Brian on 0533 841 1882.

The annual poppy walk to the west of Girne is next up on the agenda on Sunday 28 October with the registration desk open from 9.30am at Ozzie’s Place in Lapta as well as the poppy shop stall and Mrs Scott will again be available for membership renewals. The 10km walk will then start at 10.45am and the 5km walk at 11am with an entry fee of 15tl on the day for both walks.

Mrs Bell said: “Over the last 7 years the branch has managed to raise an incredible £91,305 for the RBL Poppy Appeal which is amazing. We would love to crack the £100,000 mark this November but the current exchange rate makes it a hard task, although we know that the TRNC community always give generously and we are extremely grateful. You can of course have your own private fundraising events if you feel that you wish to help in any way.”

Lots going on and great to see events east and west of Girne - I'll be at the Catalkoy walk and will be buying my poppy on the 25th in Girne.... oh... and the Fez Fun Quiz same night!! Good effort RBL Kyrenia!!!
