Re: Spuds.
Have spoken to Lemar today. The lack in their particular stores is because Lemar get their spuds from Turkey and there has been a potato blight (or something) which barred them and they had to be destroyed. . Other supermarkets may be suffering the same fate. They are supposed to be restocking at the weekend or beginning of next week. Seems strange when you think just how super Cyprus potatoes are. At first I did think perhaps it was because of the very wet weather and the inability to dig them up without tonnes of wet mud. Just an additional thought.

Re: Spuds.
another drought (one farmer told me he needs 1000 tons a day) , higher electric and fuel prices. higher cost in general.
some farmers gave up... plus bigger population... thats the reason why you can not find cypriot potatoes always any more.

Plenty of potatoes at the Weds market in Girne.
Didn’t take note of the price as we didn’t need any, but did hear about a potato blight in Turkey which was restricting supply.

10 lira a kilo at the market on Wednesday - not as many stalls as normal had them
I heard a boat load is on its way from Turkey and will be selling for around 3.50 tl a kilo....
Isn’t it sad hardly any Cypriot potatoes around

Still no potatoes at Lemar, Alsancak today. They promised last week they would have some by the weekend or Monday at the latest. They import theirs from Turkey.

I was told that a few weeks back by someone who had been down south to shop. I thought it was a bit of a leg pull, but apparently not.

It does seem strange that now water is no problem, and all these new fields are being ploughed up for agricultural use, there are no potatoes in the shops. Throughout all the years of drought there were always plenty of potatoes. It could only happen here.

2.39 Euros per kilo from the supermarket on the south which is about 14.9TL, what on earth are people complaining about, if the new one's arrive at 3.50Tl, there will be even more shoppers from the south. Keep it quiet.....

Potatoes were about 1.50 euros in Lidl on Wednesday for a kilo, but we still didn't buy any.

Re: Spuds.
Apparently the shortage is down to global warming according to the paper.
Great to see TRNC is slowly getting up to speed with the catch all made up vague excuses.
Obviously slightly dated as its climate change now but nice to see we are only 7 or 8 years behind the times now.
If we are short of oranges next year I guess it will be Brexit.

Re: Spuds.
They had potatoes in my local Hos Bes so thought I would treat myself. On reflection maybe I should have gone without, 5 medium potatoes at a cost of 20.50tl. Rather expensive, so I shall go without in future. No price per kilo on the receipt or on the tray in the shop.
Little disappointed as it is my local and I use it all the time.

KC, with you on that one, the only thing I really miss is baked spuds. Acmenya are still doling out large roast potatoes and their usual Smash. Isn't it staggering 38 messages on the humble Spud-U-Like....remember those?

I suspect that rowan is referring to the amount of attention and fuss being attached to the subject, not the actual "loss" of spuds to peoples plates.! At least it makes a change from Brexit.

Won't be long before there are queues at the border, one way for spuds the other for fuel. This can only happen in Cyprus.

Then people being fined for bringing in spuds other than for their own consumption and saying they were instructed to do it!

Re: Spuds.
that there is a lack of potatoes is a mistake of the market, the dealers, who missed to import potatoes.
some month ago the agriculture minister mentioned that official declared "drought years" doubled.
30-40 years ago 1 of 5 years was a "drought year", we now are at 2 out of 5.
call it a long term wheather change", some call it climate change.
also the costs for compensating ( gov help) are going up and the gov has problems to pay. because they can not pay, farmers give up.
this does not apply for potatoes only, also the citrus fruit production is down... salination of ground water becomes worse and worse...
the next candidate to disappear from the market (or significant higher prices) : artichokes

Re: Spuds.
Not artichokes please. I used to feel they were a bit of a luxury in the UK, but here as cheap as chips (oh not spuds again) And don't think about buying so called Cyprus spuds from down south. If you read Cyprus Mail about 3 weeks ago, they are cheating. Apparently spuds from Egypt being tossed around (or something) in red soil, lifted and then sold as Cyprus spuds.
It was a foregone conclusion that less and less local fruit and veg being consumed here. Up until 2-3 years ago I rarely saw imported in the shops i.e. if it wasn't in season here, then we went without and enjoyed it. However, its becoming more and more a case of, if you want it, you can buy it but obviously pay for it! Cosmopolitan immigration? Who knows.
