I've been here 14 years and not yet seen a tarantula in the flesh. I'm quite fond of spiders so would love to come across one.

This is what Ulas Seherlioglu from TASKENT said

Lycosa tarantula / european tarantula. Largest wolf spider species on the island. It is venomous but rarely bites when provoked. Not really toxic to humans, feels like a bee sting.

Not sure I want to pick one up with bare hands, but I do like spiders, - and snakes - they all eat what we want to get rid off, i.e. flies, mosquitos, mice etc. Rescued a baby black snake from the cat the other day. Did pick that up, but then it was only 30cm or so.

Handling animals that you are not 100% sure of which species it belongs is not a good practice.

That being said, no insect or arachnid is life threatening in Cyprus unless you are allergic to it.

This particular animal you would really have to squeeze her hard to get her to bite you but even then its like a bee sting.

We have just recently identified a new species of spider that we believe is endemic to Cyprus.

You can read more about it here: https://www.facebook.com/cypruswildlife

Hold on a minute, Kemal. I spent the day with Professor Salih Gucel yesterday, and I understood the discovery had been accredited to him. Is this the royal we?

I dont know what a royal we is... We in my post meant the country of Cyprus in general... It was not intended to credit or discredit anybody.

I already gave the link above which has the details of parties involved in the discovery of the spider.

Total there are 4 names
Salih Gucel
Özge Özden Fuller
Bayram Göçmen
Kadir Boğaç Kunt

Representing 3 institutions
Near East University
Ege University
Cyprus Wildlife Research Institute (part of Taskent Nature Park)

Hope this makes it more clear for you. You can read more about it here:

This little boy was in my shower when I lived in North Cyprus and had at least one a month visit me, and for someone that is terrified of spiders that was not pleasant. Lol
