Yeni Iskele to be Site of Turkish Naval Base

Turkey has decided to establish a modern naval base in North Cyprus in order to protect its rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and to guarantee the sovereign rights of the TRNC.

I would be interested in knowing the views of the local TC population - for example, do they approve, do they really want Turkey to establish a 280,000 acre naval base on their island??
Although the Turkish mainlander immigrants may not be against it I am not so sure about the TCs who are now probably outnumbered by the mainlanders.

Simple question deserves an equally simple answer. Ask the TCs their view directly as few TCs contribute here, albeit their government has signed up to this. Speculation on this forum from expats is, quite frankly, pointless albeit it will generate opinion/hot air et al.

280,000 acres is about 1133 square kilometres.

Edited to correct the conversion figure which makes the proposed base much bigger than Dhekelia

I was thinking this looked a very latge number ? My calcs could be wrong but i used an online calculator for converting acres to square meters and it came out at 437.5 square miles! According to wikipedia cyorus has a total square mile of 3570....so turkey are building a naval base civering 1/8 th of the island ! Really !

I also checked the biggest current base in the world is here
https://www.naval-technology.com/featur ... s-4144545/
Its 3400 acres . So turkey are building a base over 80 times bigger ! They must have a very big ship

If Geçitkale is to be used the current airport renter (Nadir) will need to be bought out and the electricity carrying pylons relocated out of the take-off/landing safety zone. Not cheap, but doable and the recently constructed dual carriageway certainly offers good road linkage.

Well it's got to be cheaper than most alternatives....

I know where Iskele is and I guess I am to assume that the new proposed base would be either between Bogaz and Bafra, or North of Bafra and encompassing part of the South Karpaz coast.

I was told Kalecik, which is near the KPet terminal.
Not good news for those who have brought properties on Caesars or Four Seasons just along the coast.

Like the rest of the Turkish troops here, I guess they will keep a low profile so as to not affect what is a holiday island. Unlike the yanks who totally take over any resort they dock in.
