We have a potential problem with our meter, our bills have quadrupled over the last two months in our absence. We are aware of the increases in electric costs and have checked everything to ensure that nothing has been left on whilst we are away. We have been told that the Kibtek office has a machine that will give you an up to date reading & history of your meter. Is the machine found inside or outside of the office, ie is it open 24hrs a day?

Thanks in advance.

I don’t know about a machine but you can go to the main office in Girne and ask for a print out of usage for however many months you need. You don’t say if you are in a flat or a house. If you’re in an apartment block get kibtek to check the meter. My neighbours in the apartment block next to me had a high bill for a couple of months. They asked kibtek to come out to check the meter. It turned out people in another flat had illegally connected their electric to my neighbours meter. Kibtek disconnected them on the spot. They came out of their flat shouting at the kibtek electricians. They were fined on the spot and reconnected. My neighbor asked what they should do to get their money refunded. They were told to take the people who stole their electric to court. They didn’t. They check every month to make sure there are no illegal connections

You need to go upstairs to the accounts department at the Kibtek main office in Girne and they will give you a detailed print out. If you give them your email address they will send you the itemised bills on a monthly basis so you can keep a close check on everything. As an additional precaution, assuming you do not need any electricity at all whilst you are back in the UK, you could turn the supply off at your internal fuse box. That way if anyone has been using an outside socket they wont be able to any more!

The payment machine gives you your current balance there are two locations one at the top of steps into the kibtec office in Girne accessible 24/7 and some machines in the kibtec depot near the Wednesday market not sure if these are are 24/7 but they are certainly available late.

This is the kibtek page https://www.kibtek.com/tarifeler/

Looks at the rows with 02 konut starting price 0.7905, they give the cost for each band of usage. The last two columns represent old price (eski...) and new price (yeni...), at the moment both columns are the same. It seems to have been last updated on 11th October. I just checked my last 3 bills and the rates charged correspond to the ones on the website.

Do check the reading on your bill with your meter as they sometimes make mistakes. Also if you've been using an immerser, oven, heating (esp. Oil filled radiators) that may explain the jump.

Sounds like you should query it with your landlord, ask them to show you the last couple of bills saying you can't understand why the most recent one is double the previous one. It may be a mistake, sometimes the bills have the amount carried forward from previous bill, if the meter has been read before the last bill was paid. If that makes sense.

Ask for a printout of your electric usage. They can print out last months or a few months, whatever you ask for. You just need an old bill. It doesn’t need to be in your name.

How can that be as the time since the last reading/bill has been the usual 30-ish days, hasn't it?

KIBTEK'TEN FATURA AÇIKLAMASI

Elektrik Kurumu son günlerde dikkat çeken ‘yüklü’ miktardaki elektrik faturalarına ilişkin açıklama yaptı, teknik sıkıntı nedeniyle Ocak ayının ilk haftasında faturalama yapılamadığını, 30 günlük yerine 39 günlük tüketim için faturalandırma yapıldığını belirtti.

There was an artical in yesterday's Cyprus Today saying that there was an accounting glitch meaning the most recent bills are for 39 days instead of normal 30 days. Next month's bills will come out as normal and will be for 21 days. Anyone struggling to pay can add it to February bills without penalty. "No late fee will be imposed provided that the relevant amount is paid by the last payment day for the February bill" said a Kibtek board statement.

Why is it that an "Accounting Glitch" always happens at the higher rate of charges? Most people don't go into the highest rate till the last week of the month but now due to a "Glitch" they have to suffer an extra 9 days of the highest rate! I wonder if I can go to Kibtek to pay my bill and tell them due to budgeting of my accounts I have suffered a "Glitch" and can not pay the extra 9 days at the highest rate but am willing to pay for their "Glitch" at the lowest rate so that nobody loses out - lol. I know where the door is and can find my own way out by now.

Regarding concern over higher charges for 39 day bill

Taken from Kibtek FB page on 11th January

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

Every month, our Agency issues an invoice for electricity consumption of approximately 180,000 subscribers. Although it is our goal to organize invoices for thirty days of consumption, there may be a few days of deviations depending on the occasional holidays. Due to the technical problem experienced during the renewal of our invoicing system when entering the new year, invoicing could not be done in the first week of January. That's why the first week of January Our consumers 'bills can be arranged for thirty-nine days instead of thirty days' consumption.

Since the invoicing period is thirty-nine-day instead of thirty-days, and when the weather starts to cool down, the bills of our affected consumers are above the customary amounts. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the technical distress caused by the technical distress.

As is known, the housing tariff consists of four slices of 250 kWs and as the consumption increases, kWs charging is gradually increasing. All tariffs and consumption lines applied by our institution are for a period of thirty days. Naturally, the amount of consumption will vary depending on this if the invoicing is done more than 30 days or earlier. For more than thirty days, in order to prevent more consumers from being victimized by charging higher tariffs and with higher tariffs, our Agency extends tariffs with 250 kWs in proportion to the number of days. In this way each slice with 250 kWs for thirty days, for example; a forty-day invoice; 333 kWs. Thus, the invoicing is delayed, so that our consumers are not being wronged. To be informed with respect for the right information to the public.
