Zero Tolerance or just harsh - Mk 2

Post by sophie »

Had a bloke call at the house this morning, who presented me with my Speeding Fine. All very well, but we had some local business people in the house at the time, who thought it was harsh for the following:-

1. I was clocked at doing 3Km over the limit - They automatically give you 5km leeway because of speedos can be inaccurate, so if you add the two together it makes 8km

2. Fine of 262tl - to be paid within 15 days.

5. 5 points on my licence. Not sure how long that stays on, but I think 16 months. Still not sure when the time commences i.e. date of my "offence" or date I signed for the paper work, or when I pay.

Up to 20km over the limit 262tl fine and 5 points
Up to 40km over the limit 393tl fine and 25 points
Over 40km 655tl and 50 points

From now on I'll be doing 30km when it says so, and being passed by everyone or driving them completely nuts if they are behind me.

The reason the locals considered it being harsh, because they have all said they "would never be fined for such a minor infringement i.e. not for 3km but Foreigners are different!!!"

Its the above sentence that makes me more mad than the actual fine.

I think I'm going to try tomsteel. I was rushing to take my husband to see his consultant at the NEU at the time. I think I'd need to take a fluent speaking TC with me though.

Might not be the best thing to say if you contest the fine

How can you appeal? You just admitted you were speeding and the ticket says so, I think you’ll be wasting your time. IMPO. Just saying like.

Was the camera accurately calibrated and officially certified as in date? Why was the 'camera/speed error' not considered, the queries are endless. There were also medical mitigating circumstances. IMPO.

It’s not worth the petrol. 226tl! Do the crime pay the fine, move on!

Or be like someone we both know, Sophie, and get someone to take the points for you - and maybe even get the fine cancelled!

Go to the police station, fixed camera penalty @ girne through doors, second doors and on the left and state why you are appealing against the fine, at the time i was there both policemen spoke good english. They may help you complete the form. If you think the camera was at fault you have to go to Lefkosa.

A VERY intereresting room, all the folders contain speeding tickets, floor to ceiling over a 5 year period and they say within six to nine months they will all be delivered to the property of the vehicle. I do think this is too large a project but think soon people will be in for a surprise even if 25% get delivered!!!!

I felt brave asking him to put my registration number in, I was only a companion and was rather shocked how tickets were coming out these folders

Yes and No, I admit that I was over the limit by 3km but what galls me most is NOT the fine (that comes with the territory and is of no consequence) its the 5 points. Just out of curiosity having just come from driving to Girne and back I decided that I would stick slavishly to the limit. I've been hooted at and flashed at (by car lights I might add) but stuck to my guns both ways. There is going to be a whole load of irritated motorists when I'm on the highways. The other irritating comment made today is the same as yesterday. A local was convinced they wouldn't have bothered for them. So from being a cautious driver speedwise in the past, to being even more so. .I'll close the thread from my point of view.
