Butterfly migration
My wife happened to notice this morning swarms of small butterflies crossing our garden from East to West. The swarm lasted for about 1 hour and then filtered down gradually throughout the next 3:hours. Intrigued she googled it and found that the same phenomenon occurred in Israel yesterday were it was reported that these painted ladies butterflies were en route to Cyprus either to or from the Balkans. Really wonderful to see. Late comers have arrived now and are settling on our trees for the night.

Re: Butterfly migration
Thanks for the link Trigger.
I noticed them too.
They mainly seemed to be flying East to West, some towards the North West which made me wonder if they were on their way to Rhodes.
They have the Valley of the Butterflies where they rest in the pine trees during the summer months.
This morning was awesome.
Been here for 15 years and never seen a sight like that but then maybe the winter we have just had caused this.
Driving up the Ilgaz road I actually ended up slowing down as there were so many flying across the road.
Cypriot neighbours have never seen anything like it either and also commented to me about them.

However, I am looking forward to getting out and up on them mountains. Some of the flowers on show due to the heavy winter rainfalls look fantastic.

Re: Butterfly migration
Looks like we have the tail end of the migration as they are still coming through our garden in Ozankoy.
Last night saw large numbers Of swallows or swifts circling. The sky was black and cloudy and I thought they may be heralding another storm

Re: Butterfly migration
Good one RR. Yes, they are still around, not perhaps as many as earlier, but a load fluttered along our terrace this morning. They landed for half a minute or so on the lantana and then took off again.
