Sat Nav North Cyprus
Hi,
I have asked this before on C44.
Is there a Sat Nav, or maps for north Cyprus?
If there isn't, there is a way to make your own by driving around with a live logging GPS and transferring this data plus street names, POI's etc to some software which creates the map files.
If post codes are a problem a grid system can be created, in effect a bespoke post code system.
These can then be uploaded on Sat Navs.
All it takes is a car, some kit and a bit of tech savvy.

There is a sat nav supplier just up from the Colony hotel on the same side.
It is on the top floor above some new shops, it has a advertising sign on the top of the building.

The best I have found to date for use on an android phone is this
http://www.cyprusgiscenter.com/english/ ... nroad.html
It does cover the north as well as south though not all road names are there for the north but many are and its seems pretty up to date.

Does it show speed cameras and can it be easily updated when new cameras are installed? You might know where they are but occasionally you forget about them and are at risk of a ticket.

Sorry I think it sad that anyone needs a mapping system to get around, let alone here!!!
Quite simple if you go north you will arrive at the sea and going south at a barbed wire fence, both within about 20 miles of each other. It is just not possible to get totally lost here.
There was an excellent map available from Dutch Crusader that has most roads of any note with village names etc.

Cyprus-on-road does have speed camera data for the north, as well as speed limit data in general and can warn you if you are over the speed limit and if approaching a camera. How up to date and accurate it is is hard to say. From a purely subjective view formed from pretty limited use of the system it does seem to be accurate and up to date. It does have an update function and in the 5 or 6 months I have had it it has offered map updates over that time. I should stress however that I really have not used it that much in this time so this subjective view is both subjective and based on limited experience.BrightonJim wrote:Does it show speed cameras and can it be easily updated when new cameras are installed? Erolz -I have a brilliant device in my car which tells me if I am exceeding the speed limit.
It's called a speedometer-or Odometer If you want to get technical.
They are fitted to most cars these days and are a boon in enabling the driver to ascertain what speed they are travelling at , thereby ensuring the driver does not exceed the posted speed limit.
By simply looking at this device from time to time whilst driving ensures that I don't get speeding tickets at all!
I agree with cyprusishome's comment in that it is almost impossible to get lost here.

It's not the getting lost, I want one to find particular roads, places etc. in both North and South Cyprus.

It seems a reasonable request to me, to simply ask for a map showing road names. Every street has had a name for a few years now. Are there any published maps?

Which assumes you already know what the limit is on the particular piece of road you are currently on. The speedometer tells you what you current spped is. The sat nav app tells yopu what the limit is in the place you currently are - constantly. Maybe it is not useful but its not the same info as the speedometer.Philoz wrote:Erolz -I have a brilliant device in my car which tells me if I am exceeding the speed limit.

If you spend all day going from customers house to customer house a decent sat nav can be useful in my experience. It is not about getting lost, its about finding a specific address as efficently as possible.Philoz wrote:I agree with cyprusishome's comment in that it is almost impossible to get lost here.

Re: Sat Nav North Cyprus
Bother my earlier response has disappeared!!!!!!
philoz,
The problem in North Cyprus is many mechanical and electronic devices are not available on vehicles purchased here. This inludes indicators, lights and speedometers. So how do people cope with driving conditions that people from outside North Cyprus treat as normal!!
I can understand the issue of commercial enterprises and mapping but how does any sytem cope with the fact that our home has had Three different numbers and Two different street names in six years. So most streets have a name at a point in time and houses may have numbers but what might these be next week, next month etc?? So people like Erol do need some sort of guide but because of where we live we rely on on the principle of the company calling us before they arrrive and we meet at a known point to then guide them home.

Re: Sat Nav North Cyprus
I purchase the Cyprus on Road as recomeded by Erol for about £22 .I got it loaded on an old Windows CE sat nav with assistance from the people at Cyprus on Road ( very helpful). It's fairly accurate but still some missing areas. Like Erol I have had a free update. OverallI have been very happy loaded lots of Restaurants etc onto it for gusts at my villa

Thanks for some very useful input.
I do wish I could be as witty as Philoz who appears have completely missed the point.

Re: Sat Nav North Cyprus
Thanks for all the comments, it seems there are a couple of sat navs or maps available.
I think some comments are pertinant, in that its difficult to get lost here with mountains and the sea as reference points.
Maybe a detailed paper map would be sufficient here for most trips.

BrightonJim,
I appreciate you are new to the forum so to let you know some of us just enjoy the irony of life here and occasionally take off and have a bit of fun. There is no malice intended. If you are new to North Cyprus then welcome to a fun time as well as an informative trip on kibcom.

Re: Sat Nav North Cyprus
Most workmen out here have a very simple way of finding addresses. They ring you and say " we are at the start of your village - please drive to meet me and show me the way to your house". As many houses do not have numbers and many roads are not logged on local maps this system (annoying as it is) seems to work quite well. Maybe one day technology will find its way here.
