Heard this but thought it was thunder. I think this could escalate fairly quickly.

I was watching videos of the missiles going over the south coast of Lebanon last night and Trump`s words "the world is watching this butchery" came to mind. It saddens me. It also baffles me that as a small island, purportedly in a permanent state of conflict itself and positioned in the middle of so many warzones, it has no air defence system.

OBB, may they assume the flying time and distance between ourselves and the mainland is near enough not to need one?

Hi Sophie, what I meant was my daughter was asleep in her bed and what appears to be an air to surface missile landed just a few miles away from where she was sleeping. I suppose when I muse that there`s no air defence system, I meant how can that have happened. But then something travelling at mach 4 or 6 or whatever crazy numbers they are, don`t give a lot of warning.

Breaking news from 12 hours ago! Still nothing on the BBC about it that I can find but then they maybe think that it is of no interest to anyone in the UK as we don't exist.

I have been following this on local news. We heard the loud explosions from where we are in Girne . There has been wreckage of the missile found as far away as Esentepe according to Kibris Gazetesi. Alarming really! Lets hope that this is an isolated incident and there are no repercussions or escalations to come.

Nothing on BBC news at 9am this morning.

The FB links posted earlier in this topic are not working for me.

Looks very much like it was a missile that probably exploded in mid air which would back initial reports of debris being found over a widespread area. Would not think it was deliberately targeted on Cyprus but a worrying incident nevertheless. I am sure the world powers and those involved in nearby conflicts will look to apportion blame over the next few days.

Latest update from cyprus mail reports.
Turkish Cypriot ‘foreign minister’ Kudret Ozersay said the object appears to have been a Russian missile. “The first assessment is that a Russian-made missile, part of the air defense system, which was part of the air defense system that took place last night in the face of an air strike against Syria, completed its range and fell into our country after it missed,” Ozersay said in a social media post.

He said the explosion was thought to have occurred before impact because there were no craters.

“The pieces that fell to several different points prove that the missile exploded in the air before it crashed,” he said.

Daily Sabah report says Russian S200 fired by Syria. Don't think Turkey will be best pleased. Thank heavens no casualties reported, have to wait and see what transpires.

Note most if not all still refer to it as the Turkish Occupied Northern Cyprus. Always the inference of illegally occupied there though.

SBA Air Defence? Dream on. Don't worry, the FCO will keep the relatives informed about anything they read in the papers, feel safe you are secure.

Probably just a missle or two that missed what it was aimed at and self destructed then fell to the earth - don't panic, it was not aimed at Cyprus.

I think we should all realise Cyprus, North or South, by virtue of its location has always beeen in a danger zone and innocents (including OBB's daugher) may be at risk.. We should just thank our Deity that this one landed in an unpopulated area. We might also thank Civil Defence and the Fire Brigade that it did not start a serious wild fire in these temperatures, but I am a little puzzled how they did it as I saw no sign of Fire Engines etc. in the pictures

Would there be a different reaction if the missile had exploded over Nicosia? or a Turkish army base? or on an RAF base in the South? The missile appears to have exploded prior to hitting the ground hence debris scattered. Are such missiles programmed to do that? Could it have been remotely detonated by the firer when it was realised it was totally off course? Could it have been shot down by a Cyprus based defence system or a naval vessel somehow?

Or a beach crowded with tourists or a football stadium or (bearing in mind the time) a nightclub. That would have got the Media out of bed.

PS Is my memory failing or is there not a story that in the second world war the first enemy bomb to fall in England landed on a field an killed a rabbit?

My understanding is that it is very likely the missile was programmed to self destruct in mid air after having missed its intended target. (Possibly an aircraft involved in an air strike). Or alternatively it was remotely destroyed by the party that fired it after it had missed its target. Would have thought it unlikely that the missile was shot down by either a Cyprus based defence system or naval vessel.

Would have been better for it to detonate over the sea though. Not too sure if they had any control over it once it had been fired let alone that much though.

Hector, in essence the answer to your many questions is - maybe! It would depend on who/what it destroyed really and how much power they or their surviving relatives had/have. It is highly probable that it was a faulty missile in any case as these are old tec and have been around for many, many years now - everything degrades over time. As for a Cyprus based defence system, the Cyprus National Guard as a whole are still - although small - a force to be reckoned with in any conflict. Don't confuse them with farms armed with shotguns! But in the case of the errant missile hitting in the North, first they have to spot it, then track it then decide if they are going to take action against it - all of that whilst the missile is heading towards the North at over 3500mph! And Syria is only 140 miles away as the crow flies! Total time in the air around 2.5 minutes??

The headline in the Daily Star is a disgrace, something along the lines of "Russian missile hits Cyprus as holiday island is dragged into war in the Middle East". The content of the article is just a regurtitation of every other article of yesterday morning but as a headline its definitely eye catching. Online the article has then been flagged today with an update newsflash saying "Putin’s new missile defence system ‘hits target’ in test just one day after Cyprus crash".

      Being shared all over Facebook.

Read an article saying the South have a missile defense system capable of destroying such missiles .

But it wasn't switched on its only activated in a test or conflict situation

Point of interest flight time is just over a minute from launch

Not even a three minute warning
