It's probably not something to get that alarmed about, but I felt I should stop preparing worksheets, so as to forward you this warning, that has just been issued by the TRNC Ministry of Health. Apparently, according to news sources, "Hilmi Bolel" (age not given) died today in the intensive care unit of Lefkoşa State Hospital ... of cardiac and respiratory arrest brought on by the said virus.

According to https://www.cdc.gov/westnile/index.html "it is most commonly spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Cases of WNV occur during mosquito season, which starts in the summer and continues through fall. There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people. Fortunately, most people infected with WNV do not feel sick. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms. About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness."

The TRNC Ministry of Health ask the public;
- to get rid of any standing water that has accumulated, for more than a week, in pots etc, around the garden
- to cover tanks
- to clean gutters on roofs.

We have a ravine opposite our house which surprisingly still contains standing water, who should we report it to?

I would like to tell you all about this very serious illness, I know because I contracted it while \i was there nearly 2 years ago, had it not been for the swift action of Sallie and Gary I could have died,.

I went to Riaz at Happy Valley for a curry but I couldn't eat it because I felt ill, Riaz put my meal in a packet and I drove back to the house, thats the last thing I remember, I text Sallie and told her I was not feeling good and must have collapsed, Sallie and Gary found me unconscious in the house and called an Ambulance, I don't remember any of this, I woke up in the State Hospital to see my dear friend Riaz standing at my bedside looking very concerned, I was transferred to the private hospital in Karakum, I don't remember much other than feeling very unwell, I was in Hospital for a week and the my lovely Friends Joy and Mike took me to their house and looked after me for quite a few days until my son could get to N.Cyprus, I couldn't walk properly and then not at all as I was very unsteady, My appetite completely went and I didn't eat for 2 weeks, My son brought me back to UK and took me straight to hospital where I stayed for two weeks, I lost my mind completely and had a mini mental breakdown, I was hallucinating and became quite aggressive toward everyone one. Eventually I returned to normal, well as normal as I ever was

Eventually I came home and although mentally I was fine I was still very unsteady on my feet, that took another couple of months to get over, West Nile Virus is very nasty, Please be aware, cover yourself with protection sprays, I recommend using a powerful one that contains DEET.

I hope this is useful.

There are more details today - he was 62 years old.

Also, according to infectious disease specialist, Nesin Bayraktar, the over-50s are at most risk.

Bayraktar also commented on stagnant water in some swimming pools. President of the municipalities' union, Mahmut Özçınar, also commented on the swimming pools, stating that there should be a change in the law to allow the authorities access to the gardens of home-owners who've been out of the country for a few months ... so as to "clean the pools" - that's a direct translation from the Turkish in the report - in this case, I don't know what "cleaning" entails.

I'm sure LGC news will pick up on this today, so hopefully you can get more details from there.

I have read a report from Taskent & they are doing some testing re WNF. They also recommend reporting areas of stagnant water...…

Just found the translation from fb.

Statement on the west river virus

The West River virus is a disease spread through mosquitoes. If people are involved, it is 80 % off to be noticed, 20 % shows signs of fever, headache, and allergies. At a rate of under 1 % it can show more serious symptoms such as menu. Death rate is about 10 % when the nervous system is affected. Disease is more dangerous for people who have different health issues or over 60 years old. Look at the doctors without wasting time to see the symptoms.

Who does the disease get?
The Konak Animal of the disease is birds. In the normal life cycle, from birds to mosquitoes and then birds again. It has been found that they are also involved in other kinds of animals especially humans, horses and cats. It is a disease that can be a serious danger to horses.

How does the disease get / not?
The disease is covered by the mosquito road. It has been determined that it can also be involved with blood / transplant, besides the mosquito vector. This disease does not spread from human to man, or with the bird and / or other infected animal.

What has nature park done so far?
In 2018, the tashkent nature park has done all of the 300 animals that came to the wildlife rescue and rehab center in 2018, along with many other tests. During this period, all samples were negative. Nature Park is trying to test every animal that comes in the opportunities for such tests, and especially because of economic opportunities, not one by one, but due to economic opportunities.

What can be done to prevent / protect the spread of the disease?
A mosquito challenge must be done to prevent the spread of the disease. We need to prevent the production of mosquito production with the biological control of stable water waste, dirty open / surface water waste. Mosquito-related medicine (which can be applied to body skin and / or clothes), it is useful to use fly wire or air conditioner that does not have a mosquito in houses. Long sleeve clothes are preferred. Mosquitoes are usually active during the sun, and they are active during sunset, it is important to protect.

What can be done for disease monitoring and control?
It is important for early warning and measures for the test of the mosquitoes caught in various places and regular blood tests of the wild birds.

How can nature park make a contribution?
Hundreds of wild birds are delivered every year to the wildlife and rescue center of nature park. The research lab equipment (Elina) is available in the research lab to test wild birds, but for fast testing, it is necessary to provide a regular test program and create a regular test program. For the test of mosquitoes, it is required to provide mosquito trap and a products. If nature park has the necessary support, it can improve the necessary infrastructure in these issues and provide regular reporting to the relevant units.

It would seem to be worse than previously thought According to the source below, six of the TRNC hospitals have now admitted 13 patients, showing symptons simiilar to that of West Nile Virus. Four of those are so far confirmed to have the virus

Sallie, I can't believe this important thread is receiving hardly any posts, people just don't seem to understand how deadly this virus is, I am going to hospital to have my blood tested before I come back to see if my immune system has kicked in sufficiently as I would be too scared to get it again.

People this is a killer disease especially affecting older people.

Use mossie spray with DEET.

Jacob,

lack of posts doesn't necessarily mean lack of interest, this topic has been viewed nearly 600 times.

Thank you for your first hand account of the impact this disease has had on you, I think it will help reinforce how serious this can be.

come n aylin, the hospital in Bristol could not understand why I lost my mind and was hallucinating as they tested me for Encephiitis and I had a lumbar ouncture, brain scan and uncle Tom Cobley and all but they all came back negative, the only test that was positive was West Nile, they told me itv wasn't in Cyprus and I argued with them but I did not convince them, I will be contacting my Doctor to tell them this very worrying development, and yes you are right, lots of views, thank you for your reply.

I see a 37 year old has died, rather scary being so young and being in the medical environment for six weeks.
