info re Inverter AirCon units

Having bought two new inverter aircon units recently, we were told that these are very economical on electricity. However, on going to buy another, two separate 'shops' told us that the economy mode only clicks in after about 5 hours! Can this be true?

Inverter ACs do save more energy . A conventional AC starts multiple times and always runs at peak capacity. ... By running in a low power consumption state, DC Inverter ACs save a lot of electricity

I find that there is fast developing a whole load of employees (family members or what I don't know) who know sweet fanny adams about the items sold in the store that employs them. I have been misinformed by people in TV and electrical shops (in particular when I asked about the electrical consumption rating. Even when there was a sticker on the equipment, their knowledge was lamentable). Plus guarantee information was widely inaccurate. Pharmacists in the smart white coats, who knew absolutely nothing other than the cosmetics on sale and information on the vast quantities of Alternative and Homeopathy. Other than that phone calls had to be made to wherever. Sadly its a growing trend in other types of stores. Or maybe I'm just unlucky.

No Sophie, I get the picture but one of those people who told us that info was a fitter for the aircon company! I agree about most shops; they are not trained at all and the pharmacists would not be able to practice in the UK; the qualifications over here are not what we are used to!

What makes you think a fitter would know any real detail about the way inverter units actually work? They only need to fit them in exactly the same way as the older AC type.... they don't need to learn anything new.

Our electric consumption has reduced considerably since fitting inverter units, be it fridges or air con.

Even the owners of shops don't know or have correct information. We purchased a new water cooler this afternoon. After half an hour of reading, re reading and reading instructions again we could not make the cooler function at all. I contacted the store owner who asked if we could drive back to the shop, so that his engineer could follow us back to our house. I showed Engineer the pamphlet of instructions, he took one look and immediately told us that the instructions were for a different model entirely, even though they were in the box the cooler was packed it. Hence we would have never got it to work. In this case the Engineer, knew one hell of a lot more that the guy that took our cash and hour previously.

Surely the energy rating is the key. Something provided to help the consumer choose.

We can all sit and complain about things here and how much perfect it is in the UK. It's not. People are miss sold things there also.

As for pharmacies, the one I use regularily sometimes the pharmacist is not there so the lady phones her. I have no problem with that, it is certainly better than come back later. Last time I was in the UK I went into a phamacist and asked for a product I had bought abroad (not here). There were several waiting at the counter. In front to everyone I was asked what it was for and if it contained steroids. My reply to the first was "You are asking me in front of everyone?" to the second you can guess. I walked out.

Having said all that, glad we bought the water cooler, no more lifting the heavy bottles to turn them upside down. Also pleased with another bit of advice from the engineer "only put the hot water switch on for no longer than 3 minutes and then turn off, or you'll burn the motor out" Doesn't say that in the book of instructions!
