Assuming you are travelling east: Girne to Gazimagusa, there is a large super market on the left called Erulku (forgive the non-Turkish letter script).

Must agree Mimi2, stopped once for dog baths & ended up with big bags of dog food as about a third cheaper than Lemar

It is a good shop but not if you have to risk your life going over the mountain road

Here we go again with the 'dangerous road' stories. We often travel over there, in fact it is my choice instead of through Girne to get onto the byepass to go to Lefkosia as I think the scenery is better. Roads aren't dangerous but obviously the people using it can make them so. Keep your wits about you and make sure you can see what is going on with other motorists then like any other road around here it is safe.

Before anyone jumps in to say how fast the taxi drivers drive and overtake, how many heavy lorries there are struggling up and down the hill or any other of the preceived hazards you are responsible for the safety of your vehicle and it's occupants and if you drive taking into consideration all around you there is a far greater chance that you will survive no matter what road you are on.

Is there really any need for tabloid type drama statements to put people off travelling the island? Oh and plus they are spending a vast amount of money improving the road so people can travel faster and more dangerously!

I agree with everything Chris said. As they say in the Institute of Advanced Motorists, "Always drive at a speed at which you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear". I love and much prefer driving round TRNC and personally think it is a heck of a lot safer than in the UK as i find most drivers are sensible. There are idiots the same as in any country. And at the risk of not going off-topic, i'll take a look in Erulku next time i'm over early October so many thanks for asking the question Vaughan.

Yes should have said that the supermarket is excellent and has far more than the usual fare including DIY and homeware. Well worth a visit.

Quite agree - It is a Super Market and well worth the visit. Don't be put off by the Mountain Road it is not as bad as other roads in the North and those (generally Taxi's) who use it at speed are normally well aware of what they can and can't do and don't try to push the boundaries. I have a traffic question also but will post a new thread!
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Erulku supermarket is great and we have used the mountain road, however, as careful and considerate a driver you are, it does not stop others from trying to take their lives as well as your's, so we take a bit longer road which usually has no other traffic on it. Also in a local paper here, the other week, it stated the road traffic accident death toll here is proportionately double than anywhere else is Europe.

Looking at Google maps there appears to be two Erülkü Süpermarkets - is there any difference - is one better than the other - just wondered why they are fairly close together, one is 22 miles from us, the other 23 miles??

I just checked Google maps, and although there are two Erülkü Supermarkets listed, one of the markers is situated in the middle of an empty field on a back road

You want the other one!

If you don't like the mountain road then from Girne, Head towards Lefkosa on dual carriageway. Turn left just before speed camera. Follow road through army camp then take first left to Dikmen. Follow this road, taking left turn when signed for Taskent. Follow this road all the way to new Hala Sultan mosque through Uni campus, then turn left and you are back on the Lefkosa/Gazimagusa road about five minutes from Erulku.

I believe this route is the best for anyone in or West of Girne. Obviously if you live in Catalkoy, then the other route is quickest.

I went to this big supermarket yesterday, and yes, it is larger than most others, yes, the prices appear to be good, yes, there were a few things I hadn’t seen elsewhere, and yes, it has a wide range of things including home, hardware, gardening etc.
BUT when I factor in the journey (one hour each way) there would be little saved over a local place, even with a big shopping list. So it would only be an occasional novelty for us.

Re the mountain road- not wanting to undermine any safety concerns, but some of the views and landscape along it are beautiful.

I went there yesterday if you cant drive over that road you should not be driving nore should the women that was over taking that we all had to slam our brakes on to stop a head on . If you are that women in your little silver car you are lucky so lets stop slagging off the men the women are just as bad .
If this road is not in your driving compatibly then dont use it that woman if it had not been for men would be dead . How many accidents do you go past and nine times out of ten its a women standing buy one of the cars . Wise up or dont drive , easy

If your car is a gas guzzler then obviously it is counter-productive to drive that far. We do a once a month trip and load up so it pays for us. We fit in other things, kebab in Dikmen, coffee in Taskent Nature Park, Mardos next door, etc.

We had a lovely man smack into the back of us in stop/start traffic in Catalkoy a few years back. The traffic was backed up because of another accident further along the road. He said that he was sorry, he meant to hit the brake but hit the accelerator by mistake because he was on the phone to a client. He contacted his insurance company and told them it happened because he was on the phone and was distracted. They paid for our repairs so maybe not a problem here.
