Turkcell Registration East side

After receiving the text from Turkcell re registering out phone by 6th November we decided to bite the bullet today.

The Turkcell shop opposite China Bazaar near Erdener is able to do the paper work.

You need your passport and phone. We were asked to supply 3 numbers regularly used but for some reason the computer wouldn't accept the numbers we gave so it was easier just to hand her the phone to get on with it. Usual info required: mother and father's names, address and then sign both sides of 3 documents - took about 10 minutes each.

We then got a confirmation text from Turkcell.

Can anybody, please, explain the relevance of providing parental details for banking, governmental or telecommunications business? At least the need for obligatory government stamps on all banking paperwork has been stopped.

I think that it's possibly a security / identification issue - because of there having been a different 'Historical' naming system in Cyprus (where your Father's first name became your Surname), there could be lots of people with the same name, so including your Parents' full names narrows it down!

I know that the Passport number is also given, but that does change every time that you renew your passport...

...and they just use the same system for Cypriots and us Yabanci

So Keith, what happens if a yabanci illegitimate person states "unknown/gayri mesru" on the requiste box on the form in question? These personal details must be held on every governmental IT system used here. Just co-ordinate the systems and modernise into this century.

I'm hoping that that is a rhetorical question, because I have no idea!

Sorry K, it was rhetorical. But my point highlights the futility of the current system. If the requirement for parental details IS really justified, then having given such details once for an initial form, the TRNC Government IT system should adopt it for all of their subsequent forms. It is hardly rocket science!

When we went to Lefkosia and received our first in and out paperwork, (which I still have), we had to give details of our Mother and Father (Mothers maiden name) place and date of birth etc. One would assume this information is still on a computer somewhere. However ever since that day 15 years ago I have been referred to as Mrs ??????? and my husband as Mr ????

Come_on_aylin thanks for suggesting the Turkcell shop opposite China Bazaar. The shop in town was packed this morning so we used this one. Lovely couple of girls in there who got everything sorted quickly.

It's directly opposite China Bazaar in Ozankoy/Karakum and one block on from Tim's cafe. Coming from East on main road you would turn left as if going to Ozankoy village/Rafters and then immediately right, there's a Home shop next door. Has big Turkcell sign above entrance.

We were en route to the Turkcell office in town and thought we'd try there first knowing what the waiting time might be. We were happily surprised that they were able to do it so thought I'd spread the happiness
