We have paid at the airport when we missed a connection and were taken to hotel by airline. It is more expensive. I think it was 20 pounds each and they don't accept credit cards, has to be cash, so we always carry some sterling with us just in case. Better to apply on line if you can. It's a simple process and your visa will be sent via email.

Think you will find that you can no longer buy e-Visa at Turkish airports, you must purchase before travel

If you apply online make sure you use the official Turkish website there are unofficial ones out there charging extra for the visa. http://www.evisa.gov.tr the one you want.
Just visited Turkey Izmir never checked my visa.

They say you should always carry a copy of your e-visas at all times whilst in Turkey as you will need this if you are stopped and asked for proof of who you are ie passport and you need Visa also, this often happens if you are travelling g within Turkey on buses/coaches. We have been stopped several times this way and needed all our proof. If not you can be returned to your accommodation by either police/gendarmes. Also at the airports it's on government computer and will show against your passport so dont need at that point to see your paper copy Visa. This is all first hand info after travelling in Turkey for the past 20 years

We have just returned from Turkey. I didn’t have to show my e visa but my husband did! In an emergency you can still buy one in the airport as happened with one of our group but you need to wait until someone comes. It is much easier and quicker to get one online and take it with you.

Despite the visa being on your passport we still had to produce the hard copy on entering at Ankara.

It must be me, but what Visa is on your passport? We've always had sheets of paper. Nothing actually in our passport.

Sophie they are talking about Turkey not the TRNC. Have always (last 20 years) had my passport stamped at Istanbul before leaving the airport.
