You need to buy it online. In September we went to Turkey with a group and saw a couple who didn’t have a visa. They were able to buy one at the airport but it took ages for an agent to come to the desk.

Make sure you use the official Turkish gov website to get your visa, there are some out there charging more than the cost.

Good point Saints I nearly got scammed as the first website I completed all our details on looked very genuine until I came to pay & got a shock.
The cost of the visa has now increased it is $35 + handling charge
When we went to Turkey the other week my husband got through immigration with my visa it was not until I tried to get through we realised we had swapped the bits of paper!

We went to Turkey in June and September no visas looked at they can verify you have one when checking your passport but you are advised to carry a copy. The cost is $35 but no handling charge on the official application site.

Just for completeness' sake, here is the official Turkish government website:

https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/

The actual cost varies depending on your type of travel document and nationality. Carrying a copy, as mentioned above, is recommended, but I have not yet been asked to produce it at the immigration desk.

The last couple of times I have travelled to Turkey, there hasn't been anyone in the old application booths for a visa that I have noticed.

From UK foreign office pages:

You should carry your passport and a printed copy of your e-visa (if applicable) or residence permit at all times. In some busy areas, especially Istanbul, the Turkish authorities are stopping members of the public to conduct ID checks.
