Salty's Fish & Chips

Just had to put this out. Went to British Base for Fish & Chips 2 weeks ago...not happy. Went to UK for a week, had Fish & Chips there...not happy. On return to TRNC had Fish & Chips last night at Salty's and it was great, have been going to Salty's since 2012 and have never been let down by the quality of food. Thanks Yusuf, in is nice to know someone has pride in what they sell.

Good luck with the opening of Kentucky Junction next door!

If you haven't been to Salty's then I whole heartedly recommend it. Do talk to Yusuf, he does speak English.

Fish & Chips at Dhekelia normally the best I have had anywhere on the Island but as a second choice I will always go to Crispy Squid, give it a try next time you are this way mate and let me know what you think.

Last 3 times I went was not impressed. Batter too dark, thick and greasy, chips held in heat box far too long, never freshly cooked. Will def try one more time. I am fussy when it comes to Fish & Chips as I had been brought up in the business as a kid, my dad had a shop in Tooting called Sea Fare Fish Bar.

Tried crispy squid once when it first opened not been back, can’t for one minute understand why anyone would want to drive all the way to dhekelia for fish and chips for heavens sake, how sad is that.... Saltys is excellent much better fish than we ever get in uk.... and yes everything is cooked on order...

mrsgee, probably because I come from the North East of England where fish was always fresh and the fish & chip shop was a way of life - not just Mac Fisheries rubbish that was sold in the towns further South. Best fish and chips is a taste issue and has a lot to do with how fresh the fish is - not how long it has been thawed out - and how often the oil/fat is changed that the chips are cooked in. Best fish and chips I used to have were from Whitby but he closed down years ago when the fishing trade died off there, but before he closed he was a monthly trip from Redcar to there for his fish and chips - is that sad too? There used to be a guy had a small fish and chip shop on the main road between Lindholme and Doncaster and only opened it twice a week but if you had never tasted really fresh fish and chips cooked in beef dripping then you missed out on life! So why go to Dhekelia? For more one, I don't have to wait for 30 minutes for a meal when I get there, for two I can never eat the amount served, for three I like his fish - has not changed for me in over 40 years - and lastly, it is also about the trip as well as the meal.

But carry on with Saltys by all means - it's all about personal taste after all and his fish and chips are good as well!

I enjoyed Saltys when he was situated by the roundabout in Karakum but, for some reason, his fish and chips didn't taste the same when he moved to his new location. Not too keen on Crispy Squid, my preferred choice, although not strictly a fish and chip emporium, is The Red Ribbon - his chips are second to none.

I had 1 fish,chips,mushy peas 1 can of Diet Coke,takeaway from crispy squid in January got charged the equivalent £9:23p!! It was nice,but £9:23p for fish and chips 1 drink takeaway is a bit much!

Totally agree about the fresh fish, but let face it cod does not live in these waters so will always be frozen .... also agree, the best fish and chips were always at the coastal resorts in UK, even though I am not from the coast I have experienced lovely fish and chips in the coastal resorts, and yes, I agree, chips cooked in dripping are the best.... in the absence of dripping, I cook orange chips, a black country delicacy lol, in lard, next best thing (I can give you the secret recipe if you like, lol). But yes, it is a matter of taste, I am not a big eater so always end up taking a packet away from Saltys.... if I am going to have a trip.... I prefer to pop over and have trout in Kako Petria, which is fresh not frozen. But yes, all about personal taste indeed.

mrsgee - what a long way to go for a bit of "farmed" trout - lol. Used to go up there in the 60's an catch my own but they made it so commercial now like everything else I get. Ah the good old days!!! Long may we remember them like the Full Kebab for £1.00 with all the free village wine - long gone now...........

Lokman's in Alsancak - between the Golden Lady and Atakara supermarket, by far the best and most consistent.

I speak as someone brought up in a fishing Port - Hull - which was known for having a fried fish shop (or a Pub ) every 100 yards down every main road - and down a lot of the side streets as well!

When we first started going there on trips from the West of Ireland they were still using a coal-fired frier. The little bits of soot and coal dust added an extra piquancy which is sadly now long gone. But the fare is still delicious!

I'll have to try that one if ever we get the chance to visit one of our friends when he comes over as he stays in Colchester, but we can never get time off at the same time as he mostly comes over last minute. Perhaps take a trip to the Ross Revenge at the same time to see my mate Pat Edison.

Totally agree with KC (doesn't happen a lot) Lockmans in Alsancak are terrific and all cooked to order, Had a take away last week. Huge piece of Fish with perfect crispy batter and "proper" chips (lovely golden brown on the outside and pale and fluffy on the inside, together with portion of mushy peas. 45tl the lot and NEVER been able to eat all the chips. (dogs love them though)
